The massive defensive tackle returns to practice to anchor a revamped defensive front, bringing elite run-stuffing capabilities to a New York defense desperate for an interior spark.

The New York Jets, after a miserable 2025-26 NFL season, will look to flip the script heading into the upcoming season.

This offseason, the front office did an excellent job of revamping the defense by signing defensive end Joseph Ossai and selecting EDGE David Bailey in the first round of the 2026 NFL Draft. However, one of the most important additions to the lineup this offseason was former Tennessee Titans defensive tackle T'Vondre Sweat, who has finally returned to practice after missing time due to a hamstring injury.

Earlier this week, Sweat revealed his excitement to be back when speaking to reporters, claiming that he "feels amazing."

"It feels amazing, man, feels amazing," Sweat said. "Just not being out there with the guys, man. You know, that's just not a good feeling because I'm not out there with my brothers. But I'm back out there now, and I'm feeling good. I'm ready to go."

Sweat, a 2024 second-round pick by the Titans, was acquired by the Jets this offseason in exchange for EDGE Jermaine Johnson II. In his first two seasons playing alongside star defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, the former Texas Longhorns' standout recorded 85 tackles, eight tackles for losses, and three sacks in 29 games.

While Sweat may not be a huge interior threat against opposing teams' passing games, his ability to be a force in the run game is exactly what the Jets' defense needed heading into this season. Standing at 6-foot-4, 362 lbs., Sweat possesses the perfect frame to be an impactful run stopper. In 2025, the 25-year-old defender finished with a 79.3 PFF run defense grade, which ranked fourth amongst all qualifying defensive tackles.

After general manager Darren Mougey decided to trade veteran Quinnen Williams to the Dallas Cowboys during the 2025 trade deadline, it's clear that New York's front four needed a true run stopper in the mix. The emergence of former Cleveland Browns' 2024 seventh-round pick Jowon Briggs helped the defensive efforts last year, but the arrival of Sweat will give the organization a young, cheap, and impactful playmaker for years to come.

In addition to Sweat's comments regarding his return, head coach Aaron Glenn gave strong praise to the team's newest acquisition on defense.

"I think you guys saw Sweat back on the field today," Glenn told reporters on Monday. "Ossai was back, so it was good to have those guys on the pitch count. I know there were a couple of times that he didn't want to come out," Glenn said. "But that's just the guy. He's a competitor."
