A lot of the talk of the New York Jets' offseason has been centered around what they're going to do at the quarterback position long term. However, the Jets seemingly have that figured out for the 2026-27 season, as Geno Smith will have the keys to this offense.
Regarding who is going to back Smith up, there are still some questions about that. Many want the Jets to go out and land a young quarterback to learn from Smith, which could be a wise decision. Others believe there are some obvious candidates for the Jets to bring back, including Tyrod Taylor.
“Let’s get the most obvious free agent out of the way in Taylor, who could come back for another year with the Jets. The 36-year-old just wrapped up his second season with the Jets, where he surprisingly played in six games and made four starts. Taylor likely didn’t have on his bingo card that he would be starting games for the Jets last season, but the QB carousel was a revolving door after the Justin Fields era imploded.
“The veteran signal caller completed 59.7 percent of his passes for 779 yards, five touchdowns, and five interceptions. Taylor also showed that he still has some mobility, too, rushing for 143 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries. Looking at the Jets’ current QB room, one could make the argument that there’s no room for Taylor since they have Geno Smith locked in as the starter, plus Brady Cook and Bailey Zappe. And there’s the small possibility that the Jets take a quarterback in this year’s draft class, given they have nine selections,” Jovan Alford wrote.
Bringing Taylor back wouldn't be the worst idea for the Jets, but they kind of know what they have in him already. Not to say that he isn't a fine backup and can get the job done in spurts, but it isn't exactly like Taylor is some elite backup who has won the Jets a lot of games. There are far worse options to bring back, but personally, I’d pass in this scenario due to knowing what he is already.
