The New York Jets certainly still have a chance to improve one of their biggest weaknesses on the offensive side of the football, even if a deal for a disgruntled star would be risky.
Amid another offseason of changes, the Jets have made it clear that they want to build a better, complete offense. Garrett Wilson is one of the best in football, but beyond him, the depth chart is just not good. That issue was a major problem last season, as Wilson hardly played and still finished with the most receiving yards on the team.
Instead of forcing a move in the draft or overpaying for a bigger name, the Jets could take advantage of a unique opportunity in free agency. Justin Melo of Jets Wire believes New York should pursue veteran wide receiver Jauan Jennings, especially given how his market has changed.
“Jauan Jennings obviously hasn't met the market he expected, or else he'd already be signed. Indications are Jennings was hoping for a Romeo Doubs-like or Wan'Dale Robinson-like deal in free agency. That hasn't materialized. With his asking price potentially coming down, the Jets should consider making an offer,” he wrote.
Per Vic Tafur of The Athletic, he definitely won’t return.
“Gotta start it off with an easy one. No. The money has been spent, and the position has been filled. Jennings made some big catches and some nasty blocks for the 49ers, and you gotta feel bad for him that his free-agent market was soft,” he wrote.
Jennings is a nice player, but it’s fair to wonder if what he did with the San Francisco 49ers last season is something the Jets want to deal with. If he didn’t want to show up and play for a good 49ers team, what will happen when he doesn’t get targets some week in New York?
Perhaps nothing, but I think it’s something the Jets have to think about.
On the flip side, he wouldn’t be asked to be a No. 1 option in New York, which makes the fit better for the Jets. Instead, Jennings would be a nice piece with Wilson.
