Now that the season is officially over and the New York Jets are locked into the No. 2 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, the conversation is louder than ever about who they’ll select.
There are some obvious names, including Fernando Mendoza, Dante Moore, and Ty Simpson.
That’s what makes Anthony Licciardi of Sporting News linking New York to Trinidad Chambliss so interesting, as he wasn’t viewed as someone who would go within the first two picks of the draft just a few weeks ago.
This season collapsed in a similar fashion, leaving the Jets right back to where they’ve been too many times over the past decade. Chambliss has shown some great signs, but there’s no guarantee that he’ll be the answer.
“It feels safe to assume that Mendoza will be taken first overall. Moore is the odds-on favorite to go second, but the football world isn't entirely convinced that he will declare before the mid-January deadline. Is there a world where Chambliss sustains this momentum, Moore returns to Oregon, and New York rolls the dice? A few mock drafts might indulge.
“If the Jets aren't convinced at the top of Round 1, the 16th pick and a pair of second-rounders also feel like viable landing spots for Chambliss, even if a short-term bridge (or Moore) is a more likely option,” he wrote.
Barring something drastic happening over the next few months, it doesn't seem likely that the Jets will have an opportunity to select Mendoza, just as he mentioned above.
I sneakily agree that Chambliss would be a nice fit.
Chambliss might not be the best option, but the Jets shouldn’t love Simpson or Moore. Not to say that either one of them can't be a good quarterback in the NFL, and there have been times when I really liked Simpson, but Chambliss really impressed me toward the back end of the season. He did some very good things in the SEC, similar to Simpson.
The obvious question that comes with that is whether the Jets have an opportunity to develop a quarterback at the level they need to. Over the past few years, New York hasn't shown that it is able to do so.
