The New York Jets have hired Karl Dunbar as their defensive line coach.
Dunbar, 58, returns to the Jets after serving in the same capacity from 2012 to 2014.
Dunbar, who was the DL coach the past eight seasons for the Pittsburgh Steelers, has 19 years of NFL defensive line coaching experience. He spent one season with the Chicago Bears in 2004 before joining the Minnesota Vikings from 2006 to 2011.
In addition to coaching with the Jets under Rex Ryan, Dunbar held the same position on Ryan's Buffalo Bills staff in 2015.
New York's new DC is former Miami Dolphins assistant Brian Duker. However, head coach Aaron Glenn will call defensive plays next season.
New York went 3-14 this season under Glenn. The team was horrendous on both sides of the ball.
How inadequate, you ask? The Jets became the first team in NFL history to not record a defensive interception and lose five straight games by 23 or more points within a single season.
New York was 29th in the league in points per game and 31st in points per game allowed. The Jets' three wins this season came against the Cincinnati Bengals, Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons.
Even though Glenn's first year in New York was a disaster, he will not be fired. The Jets signed Glenn to a five-year contract last offseason.
"I understand what everybody on the outside is saying," Glenn said. "I'm going to take all those arrows, and that's OK, because I do know this: It's going to turn. And I'm confident in that. ... Just trust me. I know it's hard to say, but trust me and have faith in what we're doing."
The Jets have the second overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. They are expected to draft a QB and part ways with Justin Fields, who signed a two-year, $40 million contract with the franchise last offseason.
New York's new OC is Frank Reich. He replaces Tanner Engstrand.
