The New York Jets made a difficult decision with their offensive line early in the offseason, allowing former first-round pick Alijah Vera-Tucker to leave in free agency. The former Jets lineman ultimately landed with the New England Patriots, agreeing to a three-year deal that helps a division rival while raising questions about why the Jets chose not to keep him around.

Vera-Tucker entered the NFL with major expectations after the Jets selected him in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Early in his career, he showed exactly why the organization valued him so highly.

Known for his versatility and physical play, Vera-Tucker quickly became one of the more important pieces of the Jets’ offensive line when he was available. He showed the ability to play multiple positions up front and often held his own against some of the elite pass rushers.

However, staying on the field became a major issue during his tenure in New York. Vera-Tucker dealt with multiple injuries across multiple seasons, limiting his availability and preventing him from consistently building anything. Those injury concerns ultimately played a major role in the Jets’ decision not to give him a new contract once free agency arrived.

According to Rich Cimini of ESPN, the organization never showed much interest in bringing him back once the market opened.

“Former Jets G Alijah Vera-Tucker is signing a three-year deal with the Patriots, per reports,” Cimini wrote. “The Patriots have intel on AVT from former Jets coaches, including Todd Downing. The Jets never showed a strong interest in keeping him, mostly because of the injury history.”

For New England, the move represented a risk on a player who has already shown he can perform at a high level when healthy. The Patriots are hoping that Vera-Tucker can regain the form he showed earlier in his career and stay on the field.

From the Jets’ perspective, the decision is easier to understand. While Vera-Tucker’s talent has never been in question, committing big money to a player who has struggled to stay healthy carries risk. Ultimately, the Jets appear to have prioritized durability and long-term roster stability over worrying about.
