New York Jets Should Only Draft Up-and-Coming QB After First-Round cover image

The New York Jets obviously aren’t set at quarterback again after a disappointing 2025 season that left the franchise searching for the same answer it has been looking for over the past decade.

There are options, but where will the Jets go?

According to Pro Football Focus, the Jets could look toward an intriguing option in the upcoming draft in Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss.

“There could be room for a second signal-caller from Ole Miss at MetLife Stadium,” Josh Liskiewitz wrote. “The Ferris State transfer broke out for the Rebels in 2024, recording 29 big-time throws, which ranked third among draft-eligible quarterbacks. He also forced 19 missed tackles and scored eight rushing touchdowns.”

It’s not hard to see why the Jets would be interested in a player like Chambliss, especially given where the quarterback room currently stands.

Justin Fields remains under contract, but his 2025 season failed to convince the front office that he’s the long-term answer. New York could create cap flexibility by moving on, which it is expected to do, but even if Fields returns, he won’t play.

Chambliss isn’t being projected as a Day 1 starter or franchise savior, and that’s important context. Instead, he profiles as a possible starter in the near future with the right coaching.

Under head coach Aaron Glenn, the Jets want to emphasize toughness, competitiveness, and versatility. Chambliss checks each of those boxes stylistically, even if he has some work to do in other areas.

The Jets don’t need Chambliss to start immediately, as they just need someone who can develop behind a veteran or compete in camp. That’s a far healthier environment than asking a rookie quarterback to fix everything from Day 1, but it’s also possible that he’ll end up being the starter.

There’s been some noise about him getting drafted higher than most are projecting, so the Jets will have to consider that.

New York doesn’t need to take a quarterback early in the draft if the board falls a certain way. Finding value later, even if it isn’t Chambliss, would be a better plan.

Regardless, expect the Jets to add a quarterback in the future.
