The Jets signed Geno Smith to be their quarterback this season, but could they look to select their quarterback of the future in this draft?

The New York Jets entered this offseason with a litany of holes to fix after a truly awful season last year. They finished 3-14, had one of the worst offenses in the league, and became the first team to not record a single interception on the other end of the field.

As free agency began, the Jets actually came out blazing as they loaded up on the defensive end with many likely starters, while also filling their hole at the quarterback position by signing former-Jet Geno Smith

They're already a much-improved team over last season, and we still haven't even gotten to the draft yet. The Jets will have a total of nine picks in this upcoming draft, with two in the first half of the first round at 2 and 16.

They have an opportunity with those two picks to draft future pillars of the new team they're trying to build. After some news today, it may have given us some insight into how they plan to use one of their picks in this draft.

Jets to Host Private Workout Friday With QB Ty Simpson

Per Field Yates, the New York Jets will be holding a private workout with Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson on Friday.

Simpson is widely considered to be the second-best quarterback in this draft behind likely number one overall pick Fernando Mendoza. Could the Jets look to lock up the position for the future by selecting Simpson?

Last year at Alabama, Simpson played his first full season for the Crimson Tide and looked great prior to the College Football Playoffs, where he and Alabama got embarrassed by the eventual National Champions, Indiana.

In his junior season, Simpson threw for 3,567 yards and 28 touchdowns while only recording 5 interceptions. He was, without a doubt, one of the more elite quarterbacks in the country.

The question is, should the Jets use a first-round pick to acquire him if interested? Simpson has been mocked all over the board, from a mid-first round pick to an early second round pick; it truly varies. If you're New York, do you use one of your valuable firsts on a QB in this class?

This draft class is widely regarded as weak at the quarterback position. Do you wait until next year, when the quarterback class is predicted to be one of the best, possibly ever?

Hopefully, this private workout on Friday answers a lot of those questions for the Jets, because at quarterback, you can't afford to be wrong, as they've found for the past decade.
