The New York Jets have already made impressive changes to their offense this offseason, but there’s still an opportunity to add more in the wide receiver room. With the Jets adding Geno Smith to their offense, they at least have a quarterback who can throw the football a bit.
After the Denver Broncos Jaylen Waddle trade changed Denver’s offense, the Jets could certainly benefit from the deal.
One name that makes sense is wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr. While he's not a perfect player, the Jets’ roster could use him as a WR3 and he should be rather cheap.
At just 24 years old, he’s a young receiver with decent tools that haven’t fully developed at the NFL level. Not to say they ever will, but there’s some promise there.
For the Jets, the idea is even better when we think about the value. Mims won’t require a significant trade package, making him a low-risk addition compared to other options on the market. At the same time, he could step into a meaningful role right away. Given the current depth chart, he’d likely slot in as the No. 3 receiver, and there’s even an argument that he could be a WR2.
Mike Luciano of FanSided brought up the idea, adding that he’d immediately come in and bring the Jets value.
“Mims may not be as valuable to the Jets as some other teams. Mims is an All-Pro returner, but with Kene Nwangwu and Isaiah Williams already in town, Mims' ability to flip the game via special teams may not be needed. However, he still has some potential worth mining as a receiver.
“Mims would immediately be the No. 3 wide receiver on this roster. Mims, who caught 98 passes for 1,202 yards in three seasons, will turn 24 years old in a few days. With plus speed and the ability to get open underneath, Mims may need a bigger target share to flex his full potential,” he wrote.
If the Jets want to add offensive help as they did at the deadline without overspending, Mims would be a player who would make sense.
