The New York Jets signed Joseph Ossai to a three-year, $34.5 million contract this offseason in free agency and one NFL analyst believes the former Cincinnati Bengal will have a breakout 2026 campaign.
Moe Moton of Bleacher Report thinks Ossai will play well for the Jets next season.
"Ossai should be the starter opposite Will McDonald IV, which will allow him to see the field more than he did in Cincinnati," Moton wrote. "The four-year veteran is primed for a breakout year in a full-time starting position. "Ossai has recorded five sacks in back-to-back terms.
"Last season, he registered a career-high nine tackles for loss while on the field for 67 percent of the defensive snaps. Because of Hendrickson's injuries and Shemar Stewart's delayed career start because of a holdout, the 25-year-old started to translate more of his potential into production."
Ossai had five sacks, 21 solo tackles, nine tackles for loss and 12 QB hits for the Bengals last season in 14 games. The five sacks tied a career high.
The 25-year-old Ossai enters next season with 14.5 sacks, 59 solo tackles, 16 tackles for loss and 44 QB hits in his career. The Jets are counting on him to help their defense be much, much better next season.
The Jets went 3-14 last season. They became the first team in NFL history to not record a defensive interception and lose five straight games by 23 or more points within a single season.
New York didn't fire head coach Aaron Glenn after one season. He will call the defensive plays next season.
"First and foremost is how I'm going to be with the defense and I will be the playcaller. To me, play-calling is my superpower," Glenn said. "I did it four years in Detroit and, man, just look at the maturation of how we improved every year and how I improved as a playcaller. I really missed doing that, and I think it's a huge part of helping us become the team that I and Mouge [GM Darren Mougey] see and that [owner] Woody [Johnson] sees us becoming."
The Jets have the second pick in this year's NFL Draft. They are expected to draft a QB.
