Report: Jets Already Make Quarterback Move to Begin Offseason cover image

The New York Jets have already decided on a quarterback move in the early stages of the NFL offseason.

The quarterback position has been a never-ending problem for the New York Jets, and the hope is that it will finally come to an end this April when they will likely have the opportunity to select Dante Moore in the NFL Draft.

We still have months to go before that can occur, though, and until then, the Jets will have to make some other decisions under center.

On that note, New York has gotten an early start, signing quarterback Bailey Zappe to a futures deal, via Tom Pelissero of NFL media.

Zappe spent the 2025 campaign on the Cleveland Browns' practice squad and didn't play in a single game during the regular season.

However, the 26-year-old does have experience.

Zappe was originally selected by the New England Patriots in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft and actually made 14 appearances and eight starts in two seasons with the Patriots.

During that time, the Western Kentucky product threw for 2,053 yards, 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing 63.2 percent of his passes and posting a 78.5 passer rating.

Zappe was waived by New England in August 2024. He then proceeded to make his way to the Browns, where he made one start. He went 16-for-31 with 170 yards, a touchdown and a couple of picks during that lone outing.

The Jets signed Justin Fields to a two-year, $40 million contract last offseason, hoping the former first-round pick would serve as a dependable stopgap, at the very least.

Needless to say, that did not happen, as Fields struggled mightily throughout 2025 and was ultimately benched in favor of Tyrod Taylor.

Then, after late season-ending injuries to both Taylor and Fields, New York rolled with undrafted rookie Brady Cook as its signal-caller for the remainder of the year.

The general expectation is that the Jets will cut Fields this offseason. Taylor is slated to be a free agent, but New York may have interest in bringing him back for 2026.

Most likely, the Jets will take a quarterback — probably Moore — in the NFL Draft, but Zappe could serve as a depth piece for the club.

Of course, if Zappe actually ends up getting any starts for Gang Green next fall, it wouldn't be a great sign for the club.
