The New York Jets have traded their talented cornerback Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts, in an effort to retool their team midseason.

The New York Jets made a massive move, and it involves one of their most important defensive backs.

NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reported earlier today that two-time Pro Bowler and two-time All Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner has been traded to the Indianapolis Colts in a shocking blockbuster move.

The return is reportedly two first-round picks, as well as second-year wide receiver AD Mitchell.

The trade also gives the Jets four first round picks over the next two seasons.

Since 2023, Gardner has struggled to recover from his All-Pro campaigns in his first two seasons.

In his rookie and sophomore years, Gardner combined for 31 pass breakups, including a league-leading 20 in his rookie season.

However, in years three and four, he’s only combined for 15 so far, with his tackling numbers being down, as well as his interceptions.

You can probably attest to his struggles to the Jets becoming a massive disappointment over the past few years.

New York hasn’t had any success since 2010, but three years ago after acquiring Aaron Rodgers, the expectations for the team was “playoffs or bust.”

However, for the Jets, it allows them to be relieved of a hefty average cap hit of $26.1 million over five years that Gardner carries.

With the Jets going 1-7 to start the 2025 season, it’s all but evident that next season will have to be a focus for New York.

A scenario that is far too familiar for Gang Green nation.

Acquiring AD Mitchell is also an under-the-radar pickup for the Jets, who are looking to rebuild their wide receiver room, after already trading for John Metchie.

Mitchell was a former second round pick in the 2024 Draft and has underperformed for the most part with the Colts.

Coming to New York will be a breath of fresh air for the talented receiver out of Texas.

For the Colts, this is a huge get for a team that has championship aspirations. Already holding an NFL-best 7-2 record, the Colts boost their defense in a major way.

Gardner, who is still recovering from a concussion, slides in as Indianapolis’ left cornerback while Mekhi Blackmon may head to the nickel corner position, or overtake Jaylon Jones, who had just returned from injury’s, right corner spot.

The Colts have been one of the NFL’s most surprising teams this season. Not many believed what was coming up for the Colts after Anthony Richardson was injured to start the season, and Daniel Jones was inevitably named starter.

Jones has been a revelation for the Colts, throwing for a league leading 2404 passing yards, as well as a 54.4% Passing Success Rate.

It’s clear that the Jets are rebuilding midseason, and general manager Darren Mougey is not wasting any time.
