The New York Jets could acquire a Pro Bowl QB this offseason.

The New York Jets need a new starting QB for next season and they are reportedly doing "homework" on a Pro Bowler.

According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, the Jets are looking at Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa.

Tagovailoa was benched with three games remaining last season after throwing for 20 touchdowns and a career-high 15 interceptions in 14 games. He's in the second year of a four-year, $212.4 million extension he signed in 2024 and has $54 million guaranteed in 2026.

Releasing Tagovailoa would result in an NFL-record $99.2 million dead cap hit if done before June 1. That figure would be split over the next two seasons if he's released after June 1, with a $67.4 million dead cap hit in 2026.

Tagovailoa has 18,166 passing yards, 120 passing touchdowns and 59 interceptions in the NFL. He was the fifth overall pick in the 2020 draft.

Tagovailoa made the Pro Bowl in 2023. He led the NFL that season in passing yards (4,624).

The Jets have the second pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. They are expected to release Justin Fields, who started nine games last season.

The Jets went 3-14 last season in Year 1 of the Aaron Glenn era. The team's offense was a walking disaster in 2025. They were 29th in the NFL in points per game and 32nd in passing yards.

New York's new OC is Frank Reich. Tanner Engstrand was fired after one season.

"Frank has a rare combination of experience, creativity, and calm under pressure," Glenn said. "He's lived this game from every angle — as a quarterback in this league and as a coach who's led offenses at the highest level. He is unique in his ability to see the game for what it is right now and adapt when appropriate. Frank understands offense and how to utilize the strengths of players. I am looking forward to how he will help this team have success."
