An NFL champion is not interested in joining the New York Jets and you can't blame him.
The Jets reached out to Jon Gruden about joining Aaron Glenn's staff, but Gruden said no.
Why in the world would Gruden leave his cozy retirement life for the Jets? There's no point.
The Jets are a walking disaster and Gruden's stress levels would increase by taking this job. The 62-year-old made the right decision.
New York probably wanted to hire Gruden as its OC after firing Tanner Engstrand, who was not good at his job this season. The Jets were 29th in the NFL in points per game and 32nd in passing yards under Engstrand, who followed Glenn to New York from the Detroit Lions.
New York started three QBs in 2025: Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor and Brady Cook. The three QBs combined for 2,777 passing yards and 14 touchdown passes.
Meanwhile, future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers -- who was released by the Jets after Glenn was hired -- finished the 2025 season with 3,322 passing yards and 24 passing touchdowns with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Jets have the second overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. They are expected to draft a QB and release Fields, who signed a two-year, $40 million contract last offseason.
New York has been a joke for years. Sure, Gruden would have been a fun hire, but even his knowledge of football wouldn't have been enough to turn his putrid franchise around.
Many Jets fans believe Glenn should have been fired after one season since his team made putrid NFL history twice this season. New York is the first NFL team in history not to record a defensive interception and lose five straight games by 23 or more points in a single season.
The Jets went 3-14 this season. Glenn told reporters at the end of the season that this type of campaign won't happen again.
"Once the offseason starts, we're going to work our asses off, and we will remember everything," Glenn said. "That's all I'm going to say: We will remember everything."
The Jets were projected to draft Dante Moore with the second pick in the 2026 draft. However, Moore is going back to college.
It will be fascinating to see who the Jets hire as their new OC and DC and who the starting QB is next season.
"I understand what everybody on the outside is saying," Glenn said. "I'm going to take all those arrows, and that's OK, because I do know this: It's going to turn. And I'm confident in that. ... Just trust me. I know it's hard to say, but trust me and have faith in what we're doing."
