Stephen A. Smith of ESPN has said plenty about the New York Jets in recent years, and none of it is ever good.
While discussing the state of the Jets recently, the ESPN analyst based the franchise once again, calling out all of the problems the Jets have had. He took shots at the upcoming draft class, saying they shouldn’t want to play for the Jets, and even had stuff to say about head coach Aaron Glenn.
“I’d go back to college before I play for the Jets. They are a football atrocity. They are awful,” Smith said. “I mean, they are straight garbage. I am a Black man that is consistently pushing for opportunities for Black coaches throughout the years. It has gotten a lot better than it was in the past. It hurts me to say this, but ain’t no way in hell Aaron Glenn should still be the head coach of the New York Jets. They were horrible.”
Smith’s comments are easy to understand when you look at how the Jets’ season played out.
What was supposed to be a reset quickly turned into another year defined by more questions than they had when entering the year. Somehow, this season was even worse than most thought it’d be.
Instead of building anything, the Jets looked horrible most of the year.
The comment about Glenn is interesting, as many Jets fans feel a similar way. Smith went out and said some other things about that, but his point was that he didn’t do a good job.
Coaching changes, roster moves and more haven’t translated into success on the field, so while it might make sense to fire Glenn, it isn’t like the Jets are guaranteed success if they make another move.
It’ll be interesting to see if anything changes over the next few months, as there’s plenty to improve on.
The Jets now face the same challenge they’ve had for years. Until they show they can beat them, comments like this will keep coming, and they’ll keep making sense because the product on the field doesn’t suggest anything else.
It’s the sad reality of what the Jets are right now.
