Who would’ve thought that Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield had a vendetta with the New York Jets?

No, it’s not necessarily with the team itself, or the fans, or MetLife Stadium, but when the Bucs took on the Jets on Sunday, there was one man on the other side that he wanted to stick it to.

After the Bucs narrowly escaped a comeback from New York, in Mayfield’s post-game press conference he revealed why this game was so personal to him.

“Their D-coordinator (Steve Wilks) was the one who cut me in Carolina. A lot of stuff was personal today. Haason Reddick. Former Jet. A lot of people.”

Mayfield has surely had an up-and-down career since leaving the Cleveland Browns. When the Browns opted to trade for Deshaun Watson, Mayfield knew that the writing was on the wall, so he requested a trade – which ultimately landed him on the Carolina Panthers.

It was a short stint in Charlotte though, for the former Heisman Trophy winner, after the then-Interim Head Coach in Wilks chose to bench Mayfield for P.J. Walker.

After a few stops with the San Francisco 49ers, and acting as an advisor for UNC-Charlotte, new Jets head coach Aaron Glenn brought Wilks in as his defensive coordinator.

So coming into this game, even though it wasn’t a conference rival, Week 3 was circled on Mayfield’s calendar.

He also mentioned Reddick, and if you remember, has a sour history with the Jets.

After Reddick had two career-best seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, he wanted a new, lucrative contract, but nothing was satisfactory for the two-time Pro Bowler.

Ultimately, Reddick was traded to the Jets for a conditional draft pick. However, even the Jets had a difficult time reaching an agreement with Reddick and his representation, which forced him to miss the first seven games of the season.

Shortly after the Jets’ season ended last year, both parties agreed that it was time to move on, especially with Reddick’s poor performance in the 10 games he played.

Reddick ended up calling his time in New York "very bizarre" and "weird."

In the end, Mayfield came out with an exceptional showing against his former coach, completing 65% of his passes for 233 yards and a touchdown.

Reddick, in turn, made some quality plays against his old team, compiling three total tackles, including a tackle for loss.

For Mayfield, even though the game came way too close for comfort, coming out with a win and showing his old coach that he still has the goods was the ultimate goal.

The Jets’ next game is on Monday Night Football against the Miami Dolphins, with kickoff taking place at 7 p.m. ET.
