Jets' Joe Burrow Trade Dreams Just Received a Critical Update cover image

The New York Jets' dreams of trading for Joe Burrow just received a major update.

Could the New York Jets actually swing a trade for Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow?

It's what people have been wondering after Burrow made some rather questionable comments that placed his Bengals future in question a few weeks ago, and considering the Jets desperately need a signal-caller and are armed with five first-round draft picks over the next two years, they make sense as a potential destination.

But hold your horses, Jets fans. It probably isn't going to happen.

Dianna Russini of The Athletic provided an update on Zac Taylor's security as Bengals head coach on Saturday, and she reported that Taylor should be okay largely because of Burrow.

"Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has been a consistent voice of support for coach Zac Taylor within the organization, as have receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins," Russini wrote. "Cincinnati ownership has made it clear they value Burrow’s perspective, and they’ve listened in the past. Despite a 6-10 season marred by a significant toe injury to Burrow, Taylor appears to be safe."

If the Bengals are basing such a crucial decision on Burrow's thoughts, that indicates the former No. 1 overall pick will definitely be back in Cincinnati next season.

The idea of trading for Burrow was always a pipe dream, anyway. The 29-year-old is under contract on a five-year, $275 million extension that runs through 2029, and he has a full no-trade clause.

Why would Burrow even consider accepting a trade to New York given the current state of the Jets? Yes, they have Garrett Wilson, but what else?

Realistically speaking, Burrow would end up in an even worse position than the one in which he currently finds himself in Cincy.

New York needs to rebuild, and while Burrow is one of the best quarterbacks in football, it just doesn't seem like much of a match.

Plus, Burrow has an extensive injury history and has only played three full seasons since entering the league in 2020. That makes the idea of surrendering a bevy of first-round picks in a Burrow trade rather risky.

Burrow was probably never heading to the Jets anyway, but this Russini report essentially puts the kibosh on any chance there was of a trade occurring.
