Just a few years ago, everybody thought that newly acquired New York Jets wide receiver John Metchie had an opportunity to be a pretty good player in the NFL.

Unfortunately, he's dealt with a lot of tough situations throughout his young career, even being diagnosed with an acute type of blood cancer.

Metchie has seen it all in the NFL, and, remarkably, he's even still in the league despite everything he's gone through.

It shows how tough a hard worker he is and how much he believes in the work he puts in week in and week out.

But for the Jets, they'll need him to be just as good as he once was. I don't expect Metchie to be the player that everybody thought he was going to be, but I definitely see a path where he can be a WR2 or WR3 for this organization.

It certainly isn't a guarantee by any means, but I love taking a risk on a player who was once regarded as very high on the totem pole just a few years ago.

When speaking to reporters about what he thinks Metchie can be, it seems that head coach Aaron Glenn also has some high expectations for him.

Glenn went on to state that he's the type of player they want in New York, which is what he’s been challenged in trying to find over the last few months. Glenn is looking to build a foundation, and if Metchie can be a part of that, we definitely need to look at this trade as a big win.

“He is our type of guy,” Glenn said, per Jets X Factor. “Some of the things that he talked about really resonate with what we talk about here… our brand of football that we talk about in-house really fits who the player is, so I’m excited to have him. Looking forward to him getting out and being part of what we’re trying to accomplish this season.”

The counting stats throughout Metchie’s career haven't been much to write home about, but again, I can't really put too much stock into that considering what he's been through in his life.

During the 2024 season, he averaged 10.6 yards per reception, so there's definitely talent there.
