New York Jets Must Steer Clear of One Particular QB cover image

The New York Jets must avoid one quarterback in particular during the NFL offseason.

The New York Jets will almost certainly make a move at quarterback this offseason. That much we know. Whether it's via the NFL Draft or by other means, however, remains to be seen.

The former is the more traditional method and is the one that should be employed. The Jets need a franchise quarterback and need to cease going for stopgaps. Has New York had much success drafting signal-callers? No, but at some point, the Jets have to hit on one, right?

But on the other side of the coin, you'll probably hear some conjecture about New York pursuing Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray in the coming months.

This is something the Jets should avoid at all costs.

Look: there is a reason Murray hasn't worked out in Arizona. Not only has the former No. 1 overall pick been disappointing as a whole, but he has an injury history (most notably the torn ACL he suffered during the back half of 2022) that is undoubtedly concerning.

There have also been questions about Murray's work ethic, although how much stock we should actually put into those claims is up for debate.

Regardless, Murray played just five games this season before suffering a foot injury that resulted him heading to the injured reserve list, and it seemed pretty clear all long that even if the 28-year-old became healthy again, he would remain on the bench.

Murray has played just one full season in the last five years, and when he has been on the field, he has not performed particularly well.

The University of Oklahoma product also has two years (and a club option for 2028) remaining on the five-year, $230.5 million extension he signed with the Cardinals in July 2022. Now, there is a chance that Arizona outright releases him, in which case, this point would be moot. But in the event of a potential trade, why should the Jets want to take on that much salary?

New York should simply roll with the old-fashioned method of getting a quarterback. There is absolutely no reason why the Jets should be trying to take a shortcut by pursuing Murray or any other veteran signal-caller that may be on the chopping block this coming offseason.
