From Auburn Hills to the NFL’s brightest stage, John Morton has returned to his Michigan roots as the Detroit Lions’ new offensive coordinator, poised to unleash one of the league’s most explosive offenses in 2025. With a coaching career under greats like Sean Payton and Jon Gruden, and a track record of elevating stars like Drew Brees, Derek Carr, and Bo Nix, Morton is a seasoned veteran ready to take charge.

A Michigan native, Morton grew up in Auburn Hills, where he attended Avondale High School and later played wide receiver at Western Michigan University. His NFL coaching career began in 1998 with the Oakland Raiders, where he served as an offensive assistant, senior offensive assistant, and tight ends coach.

Morton then moved between college and NFL roles, landing with the Detroit Lions in 2022 as a senior offensive assistant. After one year in Detroit, he joined the Denver Broncos as passing game coordinator from 2023 to 2024. Following the departure of Ben Johnson, Lions head coach Dan Campbell tapped Morton as the team’s offensive coordinator for the 2025 season.

What makes Morton qualified to lead one of the NFL’s deadliest offenses? His resume speaks volumes. As passing game coordinator in New Orleans, Morton helped Drew Brees earn first team All-Pro honors and finish second in MVP voting. From 2007 to 2010, he served as USC’s passing game coordinator, honing his craft in the college atmosphere. Morton returned to the Saints in 2015 and 2016 as wide receivers coach, propelling Michael Thomas and Brandin Cooks to lead the team in receiving yards, and the NFL in total yards.

Later, under Jon Gruden with the Raiders, Morton coached future Pro Bowlers Josh Jacobs and Darren Waller to their first career honors. He also transformed Derek Carr into one of the league’s top passers, with Carr breaking the Raiders’ franchise record for passing yards with 4,804 in a single season.

Most recently, Morton spent two seasons (2023-24) with the Denver Broncos as passing game coordinator. Reuniting with Sean Payton, he helped rookie quarterback Bo Nix emerge as a Pro Bowl-caliber talent. Nix threw for 29 touchdowns, the second-most by a rookie quarterback in NFL history.

In Week 10 of the 2024 season, Nix became the first rookie quarterback to complete over 80% of his passes while throwing for at least four touchdowns and 300 yards in a single game.

Morton is a natural fit for Detroit’s high-powered offense, led by accurate and efficient quarterback Jared Goff. While he may not have the same flair as predecessor Ben Johnson, Morton’s results driven approach could elevate the Lions even further. With weapons like Jameson Williams, Jahmyr Gibbs, and a talented supporting cast, Morton has the tools to scheme up dynamic plays.

Don’t be surprised if Williams and Gibbs deliver career best performances, propelling the Lions to pick up right where they left off in 2024.
