The Lions are coming off their bye week with several offensive stars playing at an elite level. From Penei Sewell’s dominance to Jahmyr Gibbs’ explosive production, here are Detroit’s top five PFF-graded players.

With Week 6 wrapping up tonight, the Detroit Lions currently hold a 3-2 record as they come off their bye week. Detroit will now prepare to take on the Green Bay Packers at Ford Field as it looks to reclaim its spot near the top of the NFC North.

With Pro Football Focus (PFF) grades updated for nearly every team, aside from the Washington Commanders and San Francisco 49ers, who are playing tonight, it’s time to check in on the five highest-graded offensive players for the Lions.

1. Penei Sewell — 90.9

Sewell is playing his first season at left tackle and already holds the highest PFF grade among all tackles in the NFL at 90.9. He also boasts a 79.0 pass-blocking grade and an outstanding 93.0 run-blocking grade.

For perspective, Sewell finished with an 95.1 overall grade last season and an 89.6 grade the year before. Despite moving to the opposite side of the offensive line, he has made the transition look remarkably easy.

Sewell has been flagged for two penalties, which is uncharacteristically high for him, but he has allowed just one sack and two quarterback hits across 341 snaps. Needless to say, Sewell has continued to establish himself as one of the best in the game, regardless of which side he lines up on.

2. Jahmyr Gibbs — 88.3

Gibbs currently owns the fourth-highest PFF grade among NFL running backs at 88.3. He also has an 81.6 rushing grade and a 91.0 receiving grade, which ranks him as the first best in tbe NFL.

Gibbs has rushed for 504 yards, the fifth-most in the league, while his seven rushing touchdowns lead the NFL. He has also recorded 10 runs of at least 20 yards, ranking second in the league, and forced 32 missed tackles, also the second-most.

3. Christian Mahogany — 86.4

Perhaps the biggest surprise on this list is Christian Mahogany, who comes in at No. 3 with an 86.4 overall PFF grade. That mark makes him the fourth-highest-graded guard in the NFL.

Mahogany has earned an 81.6 pass-blocking grade, ranking third among 78 qualifying guards, along with an 82.2 run-blocking grade, which ranks fourth.

Mahogany has taken a significant step forward and is playing some of the best football of his career. However, things could get interesting once Cade Mays returns to the lineup.

If Mays performs well at center, Detroit could have the option of moving Juice Scruggs to left guard. Scruggs has also been enjoying a career year, giving the Lions multiple quality options along the interior offensive line.

With Sewell thriving at left tackle and the rest of the unit performing at a high level, Detroit appears to have one of the deepest offensive lines in the NFL.

4. Jared Goff — 86.3

Goff comes in at No. 4 among Detroit’s highest-graded offensive players with an 86.3 overall grade, trailing Mahogany by just 0.1 points.

He currently ranks as the fifth-highest-graded quarterback in the NFL, but his 86.1 passing grade leads the league.

Goff has thrown for 1,485 yards, the ninth-most in the NFL, and 12 touchdowns, which ranks fourth. However, it’s worth noting that several other teams have played one more game than Detroit.

He’s also recorded nine big-time throws, the fifth-most in the league, while registering just one turnover-worthy play this season.

Goff has been excellent since arriving in Detroit, particularly during the Ben Johnson era. However, his performance through the first five games suggests he may be playing some of the best football of his career.

5. Sam LaPorta — 80.6

LaPorta rounds out the top five with an 80.6 overall PFF grade, making him the fifth-highest-graded tight end in the NFL.

His biggest strength has been his receiving ability, as evidenced by an outstanding 85.0 receiving grade, which ranks second among tight ends. His run-blocking grade, however, sits at 56.9, ranking 54th.

LaPorta has recorded 27 receptions, the seventh-most among tight ends, for 316 yards, the fourth-most, and three receiving touchdowns, the fifth-most.

One of the most impressive aspects of his performance has been his reliability. LaPorta has yet to record a drop this season and boasts a remarkable 139.1 passer rating when targeted, ranking third in the NFL.

Even with some room for improvement as a run blocker, LaPorta continues to be a reliable target for Goff and an important part of Detroit’s offense.
