The Lions’ defense has officially reached a breaking point. After getting torched by the Panthers, Detroit has become one of the worst defenses in NFL history, and major changes may be needed.

For the second time this season, the Detroit Lions have left me speechless. After a 26–32 loss to the Carolina Panthers, I really have no words for this team, and I’m truly uncertain about what the future entails for this roster.

There are many parts of this game to break down and talk about, but let’s start with the elephant in the room: Kelvin Sheppard and the defense.

Detroit’s defense is allowing the third-most points through four games in NFL history, giving up 31.8 points per game to opposing teams. At one point, Panthers quarterback Bryce Young was drawing comparisons to Drew Brees. Now, don’t get me wrong, Young has played a lot better since his rookie season, but I believe if he was going against a slightly competent defense, he would not have had one of the best games of his NFL career.

Detroit allowed Panthers wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan to go for 147 yards and a touchdown in the first half alone. He would finish the game with 192 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

Carolina was even without its leading receptions and receiving yards leader entering Sunday night, and the Lions’ defense still managed to get completely torched.

Detroit had seven different players allow a 100% completion rate when targeted, totaling 175 receiving yards. The Lions’ defense also recorded just two pass breakups the entire game. Players like DJ Reed recorded a 52.2 coverage grade, Ennis Rakestraw Jr. had a 56.6 coverage grade, and Christian Izien had a 48.8 coverage grade. You simply cannot win with this production on the defense, no matter how good your offense is.

Bryce Young started the game by completing his first 11 passes and was able to do whatever he wanted, as Detroit simply could not cover anyone.

With many fans calling out defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard, Dan Campbell addressed the comments today, saying, “I think a lot of our games are going to be this way, and it’s important for us to complement each other.”

As expected, Detroit will likely not make any drastic changes anytime soon.

Currently, the Lions’ defense ranks 32nd in points allowed per game, 32nd in yards allowed per game, 32nd in passing yards allowed per game, 32nd in third-down defensive stops and 32nd in fourth-down defensive stops. Detroit has allowed opposing teams to convert on all five of their fourth-down attempts and has allowed the most first downs of any team in the NFL.

Simply put, Detroit needs more playmakers on this team, and they could be getting a boost soon with the return of Brian Branch, who is expected to practice this week.

Detroit was also in serious trade talks with the Pittsburgh Steelers about acquiring Joey Porter Jr., who could have made a significant difference on this defense. However, Brad Holmes did not make the move, and Porter Jr. was ultimately sent to Dallas.

Detroit has allowed 1,308 passing yards through four weeks. That is the 14th-most passing yards allowed by a team through the first four weeks in the last decade.

For a team with Super Bowl aspirations, this defense is becoming a massive concern.

This defense could hold Detroit back from not only reaching the Super Bowl, but possibly even making the playoffs.

Detroit will now turn its attention to the Arizona Cardinals. Where offensive coordinator Drew Petzing will get to face his former team.
