The NFC Is Getting Scary, but the Lions Just Got Some Huge News

The NFC is loading up with superstars, but the Lions could have a major advantage of their own. With two defensive stars returning, Detroit may be building a Super Bowl contender.

In just the past two days, the NFL has become much more competitive, with several blockbuster trades shaking up the league. The Indianapolis Colts have reportedly decided to rebuild and blow things up, sending All-Pro offensive guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks and All-Pro defensive tackle DeForest Buckner to the San Francisco 49ers.

Major rumors are also circulating around the Colts and Minnesota Vikings. Minnesota desperately needs a star running back, and Indianapolis has exactly that in Jonathan Taylor. Reports from notable but unconfirmed sources have suggested a potential trade between the two teams. Nothing is official yet, but the Vikings currently hold the highest percentage of odds on Kalshi to land Taylor as his next team.

Those weren’t the only major moves this week. The Chicago Bears decided to swing for the fences, trading two first-round picks and a fourth-round pick to the Titans for arguably the best defensive tackle in the NFL, Jeffery Simmons.

Over the past year, the NFC has gotten much stronger. The Dallas Cowboys added Joey Porter Jr. and Quinnen Williams, the Green Bay Packers acquired Micah Parsons, and the Los Angeles Rams added Myles Garrett.

Before last season kicked off, Green Bay made a massive move by trading for Parsons. Although the move didn’t immediately pay off, as Parsons suffered a torn ACL, he remains a cornerstone piece of the Packers’ franchise moving forward and is expected to return in the coming weeks.

There’s no question the NFC has become much more competitive, but Detroit has added two superstars of its own over the past two weeks. Their returns could be the difference between the Lions being a playoff contender and a legitimate Super Bowl contender.

Last week, Detroit activated Brian Branch from injured reserve, allowing him to make his first start of the season. Branch immediately made an impact, recording an interception and finishing with the second-highest PFF grade on the Lions’ defense.

The good news didn’t stop there. Detroit has also opened the 21-day practice window for former All-Pro safety Kerby Joseph.

There was plenty of speculation before the season that Joseph might never play again, but it appears he and Detroit are willing to give it a shot. If Joseph doesn’t play in a game within the 21-day window, he will be ruled out for the remainder of the season.

Detroit has yet to announce whether Joseph will be available when the Vikings come to town this Sunday, but his potential return would provide a significant boost to the defense.

The Lions had previously shown interest in Joey Porter Jr. before he was traded to the Cowboys, and it remains to be seen whether Detroit will make another move before the Nov. 10 trade deadline.

Judging by Brad Holmes’ history, I wouldn’t expect Detroit to make a major splash. However, I do think there’s a good chance the Lions could add a quality defensive starter to help strengthen their roster for a potential deep playoff run.

With Branch already back and Joseph potentially nearing a return, Detroit could be getting two major defensive reinforcements at the perfect time. If the Lions can stay healthy and make one more smart addition before the deadline, they could put themselves in an excellent position to compete with the NFC’s best.
