Vegas Is Sending a Clear Message About the Lions' NFC North Competition

The NFC North is turning into a four-team gauntlet, and the Lions are running out of room for error. One rival is quickly emerging as Detroit’s biggest threat.

Things are starting to get interesting in the NFC North, as the division is quickly shaping up to be the toughest in the NFL. Last week, the Detroit Lions won their second divisional game of the season, improving their divisional record to 2–0. However, Detroit will have to keep its foot on the gas if it wants to come out on top in what is becoming an increasingly competitive division.

During Thursday Night Football, the Green Bay Packers dominated the Carolina Panthers, improving their record to 5–3. Despite sitting in last place in the NFC North, Green Bay still has a respectable record and remains firmly in the playoff picture. In fact, if the playoffs started today, all four NFC North teams would qualify for the postseason.

Detroit also handed the Minnesota Vikings their first loss of the season, dropping Minnesota to 6–1. Things won’t get any easier for the Vikings, as they are set to face the Buffalo Bills, who currently own the AFCs best record at 6–1. Buffalo steamrolled Detroit in Week 2, but it will be interesting to see how the Bills match up against a much tougher Minnesota defense.

Despite Minnesota sitting atop the NFC North, I don’t view the Vikings as Detroit’s biggest threat to winning the division. Instead, I believe that title belongs to the Chicago Bears.

Last week, Chicago pulled off a blockbuster trade, acquiring All-Pro defensive tackle Jeffrey Simmons, widely regarded as one of the best interior defensive linemen in the NFL. Simmons entered the week leading all defensive tackles in quarterback pressures and sacks, and his impact was felt immediately. In his debut with Chicago against the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football, Simmons recorded a sack, two tackles for loss and a pass breakup at the line of scrimmage.

The Bears absolutely handled the defending Super Bowl champions, defeating Seattle 34–17 on the road. Chicago’s next two matchups also present favorable opportunities, as it will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints before traveling to Detroit for a Thanksgiving Day showdown with the Lions.

Detroit will have an excellent opportunity to do some scoreboard watching this week. The Packers kick things off in the 4:25 p.m. window against the New England Patriots, followed by the Bears on Sunday Night Football and a Monday Night Football showdown between the Vikings and Bills.

Meanwhile, Detroit draws a much weaker opponent, taking on the 1–6 Miami Dolphins. A win would give the Lions another opportunity to strengthen their position in the division while potentially gaining ground on their biggest competitors.

The betting odds are also beginning to reflect Chicago’s emergence as a serious contender. The Bears currently have the best odds to win the NFC North at +150, followed by the Lions at +220 and the Vikings at +260. Meanwhile, it appears Vegas is beginning to count out Green Bay, with the Packers sitting at +900.

Regardless of what the betting odds suggest, one thing is becoming increasingly clear: the NFC North is shaping up to be the toughest division in football. Detroit has put itself in a good position, but with three legitimate competitors chasing the division crown, the Lions will have very little room for error down the stretch.
