The Detroit Lions have built one of the NFL’s most complete rosters through patience, discipline and strong drafting under general manager Brad Holmes. That approach has helped push Detroit into annual contention, but it has also created expectations that the next step requires boldness. As the Lions head into another pivotal offseason, here are three bold predictions that could define their direction — from an aggressive move up the draft board to a costly free-agent signing and a quieter approach that may frustrate parts of the fan base.
Lions trade into the top 10 for a premier offensive lineman
Detroit’s offensive line has long been the backbone of its success, and the Lions could make a statement by trading into the top 10 of the NFL draft to secure a cornerstone blocker. Two names fit what Detroit values up front: Miami tackle Francis Mauigoa and Utah lineman Spencer Fano.
Mauigoa has the size, power and athletic profile teams covet in a franchise tackle. At Miami, he consistently handled top-tier edge rushers while anchoring a physical run game. His blend of strength and footwork would make him an immediate starter and long-term solution, particularly with questions surrounding the future of Detroit’s veteran tackles.
Fano offers a different, but equally appealing, skill set. Highly regarded for his fit in wide-zone schemes, Fano’s mobility and technique stand out. Utah used him in space, asking him to reach defenders and climb to the second level — traits that align well with Detroit’s offensive identity. Trading into the top 10 would be costly, but securing a premium offensive lineman could keep the unit elite for years to come.
Lions pay up to sign Tyler Linderbaum
One of the boldest moves Detroit could make is committing significant money to Baltimore Ravens center Tyler Linderbaum. With the center position uncertain, Linderbaum represents one of the few centers capable of seamlessly replacing his impact.
Since entering the league, Linderbaum has been a stabilizing force for Baltimore’s offensive line. He has graded among the league’s top centers, earning strong Pro Football Focus marks for both run blocking and pass protection. In 2024, he posted an overall PFF grade north of 80, allowing minimal pressures while serving as the line’s primary communicator.
Linderbaum’s athleticism stands out. He excels at pulling, reaching defenders and setting protections, making him an ideal fit for Detroit’s scheme. A projected four-year deal would not come cheap, but investing in an elite center could preserve the Lions’ offensive efficiency and protect their quarterback at a high level.
Lions make minor moves that displease fans
While splashy headlines are tempting, history suggests Holmes may once again take a more conservative route. Since taking over, Holmes has avoided major free-agent spending sprees and blockbuster trade-deadline deals, preferring to build through the draft and targeted additions.
That philosophy has paid off, even if it has occasionally frustrated fans hoping for star acquisitions. The Lions have rarely been aggressive bidders in free agency, instead signing role players and extensions that fit their long-term plan. Holmes has shown little interest in mortgaging future assets for short-term gains, even when Detroit appeared one move away from a title run.
This offseason could follow a similar script. Incremental improvements, depth signings and internal development may not excite the fan base, but they align with the approach that has turned the Lions into a contender. Boldness does not always mean flashy — and for Detroit, restraint could once again be the defining move.
