Despite early stumbles in Buffalo, Detroit’s explosive passing attack and extended rest provide the perfect recipe for Jared Goff to dismantle the Jets' defense at Ford Field.

The Detroit Lions are returning home after a bruising Thursday night loss to the Buffalo Bills, a game where the final 41-31 score masked some very real offensive struggles early on. Falling behind 21-0 in the first half is never part of the script, and early miscues, including two sacks and a snap over Jared Goff’s head, stalled the offense before it could ever really get going.

Yet, as the Lions prepare to host the New York Jets in Week 3, there is absolutely no reason for panic on the offensive side of the ball. In fact, confidence should be sky-high.

The Tale of the Tape Against Buffalo

It is easy to look at the early deficits against Buffalo and assume the offense is broken. However, a closer look at the box score reveals an attack that is still incredibly dangerous. Despite the early hole and a rushing attack that was held to just 52 yards on 16 carries by Jahmyr Gibbs, Jared Goff still managed to throw for 327 yards and four touchdowns.

When an offense can "stutter" and still put up 31 points against one of the AFC's elite teams on the road, the baseline is incredibly high. Amon-Ra St. Brown proved once again why he is a premier receiver in the NFL, hauling in nine catches for 142 yards and two scores, while tight end Sam LaPorta added a touchdown of his own.

The Offensive Line Will Anchor the Rebound

The biggest hurdle for Detroit in Week 2 was the sudden reshuffling of the offensive line. Already missing center Cade Mays, the Lions lost guard Christian Mahogany and tackle Blake Miller against the Saints, forcing them into a short week with a patchwork unit.

The "mini-bye" following the Thursday night game is exactly what this unit needed. With nine full days between the Buffalo loss and the Jets matchup, offensive coordinator Drew Petzing has had the necessary time to adjust his protections and get his new starting five working as a cohesive unit.

Matchup with the Jets

The New York Jets come into Detroit boasting a solid defense, but they are a different beast than the Buffalo Bills. The Jets are coming off an overtime loss to the Packers where they surrendered a 10-point fourth-quarter lead, showing they are vulnerable late in games.

Furthermore, the Lions will be looking to establish Jahmyr Gibbs early. With David Montgomery now in Houston, Gibbs is the undisputed lead back in Detroit. He was on the field for 111 of 142 offensive snaps through the first two weeks, and his ability to impact the game both on the ground and through the air will be the key to unlocking the Jets' defensive front.

The Verdict

The Detroit Lions are a team built to win in January, and early-season adversity is often the best teacher. The offense didn't break against Buffalo; it simply bent under the weight of early mistakes and a hostile road environment.

Back at Ford Field, with extra rest and a fully healthy core of skill position players, Jared Goff and the rest of the offense have every reason to be confident. Expect a heavy dose of Gibbs early, followed by play-action shots to St. Brown and LaPorta as the Lions look to make a statement that their Week 2 performance was the exception, not the rule.

*Overall confidence level headed into week three: 8.5 out of 10
