The Lions have added depth during free agency, but they’ve yet to make a true splash. With cap space still available, Detroit could still target a few proven veterans who would instantly strengthen the roster.

The Detroit Lions have been active during free agency, but the moves so far have largely been smaller additions rather than major splashes. Detroit has signed five players since the start of free agency, most of them to short-term deals that add depth rather than star power.

The only notable multi-year commitment was given to center Cade Mays on a three-year deal. While the Lions have filled some roster holes, there are still areas where the team could add proven talent—especially with plenty of cap space still available.

Here are three players I would like to see Detroit pursue as free agency continues.

Cam Jordan, DE

Few players in the NFL have been as consistent over the past decade as Cam Jordan. Even at 36 years old, the veteran defensive end continues to produce at a high level.

In 2025, Jordan posted a 76.0 overall grade according to Pro Football Focus along with an impressive 82.1 run-defense grade, which ranked fourth among edge defenders. He also recorded 10 sacks, one forced fumble, two batted passes and played 589 snaps.

Jordan has built a remarkable career as one of the most durable players in the league. Over his 15-year NFL career, he has missed just two games, earning a reputation as an iron man along the defensive line.

The veteran pass rusher is also an eight-time Pro Bowler and a one-time First-Team All-Pro selection. While his age means any contract would likely be a one-year deal, he could still bring leadership, experience and production to Detroit’s defensive front.

Another factor that makes this potential move interesting is Jordan’s connection to Lions head coach Dan Campbell, who previously coached in New Orleans during Jordan’s early career with the Saints. That familiarity could make Detroit an appealing destination if Jordan wants to join a contender.

Joey Bosa, DE

If the Lions are looking for a bigger name to strengthen their pass rush, Joey Bosa would be one of the most intriguing options still available.

Bosa is entering his 11th NFL season and remains one of the most disruptive edge rushers when healthy. In 2025 he posted a 79.3 overall PFF grade and an elite 88.7 pass-rush grade, which ranked seventh among edge defenders.

He recorded five sacks, five forced fumbles, 30 quarterback hurries and 47 total pressures while playing 563 snaps and starting 15 games.

Throughout his career, Bosa has been a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks. He has forced 22 fumbles during his career and consistently generates pressure even when he doesn’t finish plays with sacks.

At 30 years old, Bosa would give the Lions a proven veteran pass rusher who could help take pressure off Aidan Hutchinson and give Detroit another legitimate threat on the edge.

Injuries have been a concern at times throughout his career, but when he’s on the field Bosa remains one of the most dangerous defensive linemen in the NFL.

David Njoku, TE

One of the more interesting offensive additions the Lions could consider is Cleveland Browns tight end David Njoku.

Standing at 6-foot-4 and 246 pounds, Njoku is a massive receiving threat who has quietly built a productive career. Since entering the league in 2017, he has recorded 384 receptions for 4,062 yards and 34 touchdowns.

Through 118 career games, including 88 starts, Njoku ranks third all-time among Browns pass catchers.

Last season he started 11 games and finished with 48 targets and 33 receptions. His PFF grades were not particularly strong in 2025, but much of that can likely be attributed to inconsistent quarterback play in Cleveland.

The Lions already have one of the best young tight ends in football in Sam LaPorta, but Njoku could still make sense as an addition. LaPorta is coming off back surgery, and there is always uncertainty about how quickly players return to full form after that type of injury.

Adding Njoku would give Detroit another dangerous weapon in the passing game while also providing insurance if LaPorta takes time to fully recover.

There is also an interesting coaching connection. Lions offensive coordinator Drew Petzing helped maximize tight end Trey McBride in Arizona, turning him into one of the most productive tight ends in the league. It’s possible he could do something similar with a talented player like Njoku.

Conclusion

While the Lions have made several moves in free agency, the team has yet to make a major splash. Most of Detroit’s additions have been short-term deals focused on depth rather than high-impact players.

That approach isn’t necessarily a bad one, especially for a roster that is already considered one of the strongest in the NFC. However, the Lions still have cap space available and could benefit from adding another difference-maker.

Whether it’s a veteran leader like Cam Jordan, a proven pass rusher like Joey Bosa or a dynamic offensive weapon like David Njoku, there are still opportunities for Detroit to strengthen the roster before the season begins.

The Lions may be taking a cautious approach so far, but if they decide to make a bigger move, these three players could be strong fits in Detroit.
