Training camp isn’t just about stars and rookies — it’s where under-the-radar players quietly earn big roles. A few names flying under the radar right now could end up playing major snaps for Detroit this season. Keep an eye on them.

Every training camp, there are a handful of players who generate headlines — rookies, big free-agent signings, and stars returning from injury. But just as important are the players flying under the radar who quietly carve out major roles by the time the season arrives. For the Detroit Lions heading into this year’s camp, several players fit that description, including Derrick Barnes, Roger McCreary, and Larry Borom. Each could end up playing a bigger role than many expect.

The most intriguing under-the-radar player heading into camp may be Derrick Barnes. Barnes has already shown flashes in Detroit’s defense over the past few seasons, particularly as a physical linebacker who can play downhill and stop the run. However, with changes in the defensive scheme and continued development in coverage, Barnes could be in line for his most complete season yet. Coaches have trusted him more in passing situations, and if he continues to improve in that area, he could become a three-down linebacker rather than just an early-down run defender. Training camp will be important for Barnes to prove he deserves a larger role and more snaps in key situations.

Another player flying under the radar is Roger McCreary. While not always mentioned among the top defensive backs on the roster, McCreary brings toughness, versatility, and the ability to play both outside and in the slot. In today’s NFL, defensive backs who can move around the formation are extremely valuable, especially against offenses that use motion and multiple receiver sets. If McCreary has a strong camp, he could push for significant playing time in nickel and dime packages. Injuries and depth questions in the secondary could also open the door for him to see the field more often than expected.

On the offensive side of the ball, Larry Borom is another name to watch closely. Offensive line depth is critical over a long NFL season, and Borom has the size and experience to step in at multiple positions if needed. Whether as a swing tackle or interior depth piece, Borom could become one of those players who doesn’t get much attention until he’s suddenly playing meaningful snaps in a big game. Training camp will be his opportunity to prove he can be trusted as one of the first linemen off the bench.

What makes players like Barnes, McCreary, and Borom important is that championship teams are built on depth, not just stars. Over the course of a season, injuries happen, rotations change, and unexpected players are forced into larger roles. The teams that succeed are usually the ones whose “under-the-radar” players are ready when their number is called.

As training camp approaches, fans will naturally focus on the big names and top draft picks. But don’t be surprised if one of these quieter names becomes a major storyline by the end of camp. Whether it’s Barnes taking the next step at linebacker, McCreary earning more snaps in the secondary, or Borom becoming a reliable offensive line depth piece, one of these players could end up being far more important than anyone expects right now.

Every year, a player flying under the radar emerges as a key contributor. This year, one of these names could be that player.
