The Detroit Lions continued to add developmental depth after the draft, signing former Illinois Fighting Illini quarterback Luke Altmyer as an undrafted free agent. While he arrives without the fanfare of a draft pick, Altmyer’s production, experience and steady growth in college suggest he could be a sneaky value addition to Detroit’s quarterback room.
Altmyer began his college career at Ole Miss Rebels, where he served primarily as a backup. Across two seasons in Oxford, he saw limited action, throwing for just 317 yards and three touchdowns. His path to play time became clearer after transferring to Illinois, where he would ultimately develop into a three-year starter and one of the more efficient quarterbacks in the Big Ten.
At Illinois, Altmyer steadily improved each season. In 2023, his first year as the full-time starter, he completed 64.8 percent of his passes for 1,883 yards, 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. By 2024, he took a significant leap, throwing for 2,717 yards with 22 touchdowns and only six interceptions. His final season in 2025 was his best, completing 67.4 percent of his passes for 3,007 yards, 22 touchdowns and just five interceptions, good for a 153.8 passer rating.
For his college career, Altmyer totaled 7,924 passing yards and 60 touchdowns while maintaining a 63.7 percent completion rate. He also added a dual-threat element, rushing for over 700 yards and 13 touchdowns, showing the mobility that often extended plays and kept drives alive.
Beyond the raw numbers, Altmyer’s career is defined by big moments and steady leadership. One of his most notable performances came in a ranked matchup against USC Trojans football, where he accounted for four total touchdowns and 359 yards of offense. He became the first Illinois player in decades to record 300-plus passing yards while scoring a passing, rushing and receiving touchdown in the same game, ultimately leading a game-winning drive in the closing seconds.
Altmyer also proved himself on the postseason stage. He led Illinois to a 30-28 win over Tennessee Volunteers football in the Music City Bowl, earning MVP honors. In that game, he delivered a composed performance, contributing both through the air and on the ground to secure the victory.
Perhaps most impressive is his ability to deliver in clutch situations. During his time at Illinois, Altmyer led multiple game-winning drives, including several in the final minute or overtime. His poise, decision-making and command of the offense became defining traits, helping guide Illinois to multiple winning seasons and a 9-4 record in his final year.
From a scouting perspective, Altmyer is not defined by elite physical tools but rather by consistency and football intelligence. He combines adequate arm strength with solid accuracy and a knack for extending plays.
