The Detroit Lions needed help at safety, and they may have found the perfect veteran. Chuck Clark brings toughness, versatility and experience to a secondary that was hit hard by injuries last season.

The Detroit Lions continued to stay active in free agency, adding veteran safety help by signing Chuck Clark. The move gives Detroit an experienced and versatile defensive back as the team looks to rebuild depth in the secondary after injuries plagued the position last season.

Clark enters his ninth NFL season after spending most of his career with the Baltimore Ravens and most recently playing for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Throughout his career, Clark built a reputation as one of the league’s most durable players. During his first six seasons in the NFL, he missed just one game, earning a reputation as an iron man in the secondary. That streak ended in 2023 when he suffered a torn ACL, but he returned to the field and played 15 games last season, starting five.

Originally a sixth-round draft pick out of Virginia Tech, Clark has carved out a long and productive career despite being a late selection. Last season, he recorded 51 total tackles, three pass deflections, one forced fumble, two tackles for loss and one quarterback hit while playing 437 defensive snaps.

According to Pro Football Focus, Clark earned a 70.3 overall defensive grade during the 2025 season, ranking 26th among 98 qualified safeties. His run defense was particularly strong, as he posted an 83.1 run-defense grade, which ranked seventh at the position. His coverage grade came in at 63.4, ranking 39th among safeties.

Clark did not record an interception last season but still contributed in coverage with three pass breakups. Opposing quarterbacks posted a 138.2 passer rating when targeting him, and he allowed 18 receptions while giving up 13.1 yards per reception. He also had six missed tackles on the season but remained productive in run support and open-field tackling, finishing with 35 solo tackles.

The veteran safety brings versatility to Detroit’s defense. Over his career, Clark has played multiple roles in the secondary, including free safety, box safety, slot defender and even snaps near the line of scrimmage. In 123 career games, including 80 starts, Clark has logged more than 5,300 defensive snaps and over 1,300 special teams snaps. Since entering the league in 2017, he has also recorded 232 blitzes, which ranks among the most for defensive backs during that span.

Clark becomes the second safety Detroit has added this offseason, joining Christian Izien as the Lions continue reshaping their secondary. The additions come after Detroit lost both starting safeties last season to season-ending injuries, making depth at the position a major priority this offseason.

Beyond his on-field production, Clark is also known for his leadership and character. He was a nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award during his time in Baltimore, an honor that recognizes players for excellence on the field and community service off the field.

Lions fans may also remember Clark from last season when he faced Detroit as a member of the Steelers. In that game, he was credited with a game-sealing pass breakup in the end zone, breaking up a pass intended for Isaac TeSlaa to secure the win for Pittsburgh.

Clark has also developed a reputation throughout his career as a physical defender known for delivering hard hits and playing aggressively in the run game. That physicality and versatility should make him a valuable rotational piece and veteran presence in Detroit’s defense.

While this signing may not be the biggest move of Detroit’s offseason, it addresses an important need and adds experience, toughness and depth to the secondary as the Lions continue preparing for the upcoming season.u
