The Lions may already have one of the NFL’s most explosive offenses, but one young playmaker could be on the verge of a massive breakout. Heading into training camp, all eyes should be on Isaac TeSlaa as Detroit searches for its next rising star.

The Detroit Lions enter the 2026 season with one of the deepest rosters in football, which means training camp will be loaded with competition. While stars like Jared Goff, Amon-Ra St. Brown, Jahmyr Gibbs, and Aidan Hutchinson dominate the headlines, every summer brings a surprise breakout player that changes the outlook of the roster heading into Week 1. This year, that player could very well be second-year wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa.

Detroit made an aggressive move to draft TeSlaa in 2025, trading up to secure the athletic Arkansas product because the front office believed his size, versatility, and upside fit perfectly in the Lions offense. In limited opportunities during his rookie season, TeSlaa flashed exactly why Brad Holmes was willing to pay a premium to get him. According to reports surrounding the team, TeSlaa finished his rookie year with 16 catches for 239 yards and six touchdowns while operating mostly as Detroit’s fourth receiver.

Now heading into 2026, the opportunity is there for him to take a massive leap.

The Lions offense looks different entering camp. Kalif Raymond is gone, and Detroit added veteran Cedrick Wilson Jr. while also drafting Kendrick Law to help replace some of the depth and special teams production. But TeSlaa appears positioned to become much more than just a rotational player. At 6-foot-4 with impressive speed and red-zone ability, he gives Detroit a completely different style of weapon compared to St. Brown and Jameson Williams.

What makes TeSlaa especially intriguing is how well he fits into Detroit’s evolving offense under new offensive coordinator Drew Petzing. With defenses already forced to account for Gibbs in space, LaPorta over the middle, and Williams stretching the field vertically, TeSlaa could consistently find favorable matchups against smaller corners and nickel defenders. His combination of size and catch radius makes him an ideal target near the goal line, something Detroit already started utilizing late last season.

Training camp could be the moment where the coaching staff fully unleashes him.

Reports from last offseason already suggested Detroit was impressed with TeSlaa’s work ethic and development, and the organization has continued to speak highly of his future potential. With another year in the system and a clearer path to snaps, he has all the ingredients to become one of the biggest risers on the roster.

There are other candidates for a breakout camp as well. Running back Sione Vaki remains an intriguing chess piece, while defensive lineman Tyleik Williams could emerge as a major contributor in the middle of Kelvin Sheppard’s defense. Rookie Kendrick Law may also quickly earn attention because of his explosiveness and special teams value.

Still, TeSlaa stands out because his role feels ready to expand immediately.

The Lions have built one of the NFL’s most explosive offenses, but every elite unit eventually needs another young weapon to emerge. Detroit believes TeSlaa can become that player. If he dominates in training camp the way many inside the organization expect, he may not just be this summer’s breakout star — he could become one of the biggest X-factors in Detroit’s Super Bowl push.
