Star quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Bo Nix set to return from injury as the reigning division champion Broncos look to prove the Chiefs' legendary AFC dynasty is finally over in season-opening Monday Night Football matchup.
The first Monday Night Football matchup of the 2026 NFL season has been announced. The NFL shared, via ESPN, that it will be an AFC West clash between the Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs that will headline as the closing matchup of Week 1 on Monday, September 14.
The site for the game has not yet been announced, but the game will carry several high-intrigue storylines.

Big-Name Quarterbacks Return
The matchup is expected to welcome Chiefs passer Patrick Mahomes and Broncos signal caller Bo Nix back to action after both of their seasons ended prematurely last year.
Mahomes saw his season come to an early close in Week 15 due to a knee injury, while Nix was unavailable for the Broncos' AFC title game because of a broken ankle suffered in the team's Divisional round victory.
Both players appear to be trending in the right direction to be ready to go to open the season.
AFC West Dominance
The Broncos ended a nine-year run of the Chiefs dominating the AFC West division, taking the crown for the first time since 2015 with an outstanding 14-3 record.
The division rivalry kicking off the 2026 NFL season's Monday Night Football broadcast is sure to bring intrigue to the premiere prime-time event.
For almost a decade, Mahomes and the Chiefs have been on the top of the football world, not just in the AFC West, but across the NFL. Their steep decline last year, even before the quarterback's injury, has a lot of curious minds wondering if the dynasty is on a downturn. This pivotal matchup to open the 2026 season will be the first step in answering that lingering offseason question.
