Todd Monken enters his first training camp with Cleveland still searching for answers at quarterback and beyond.
The Cleveland Browns aren’t exactly known for being synonymous when it comes to consistency at quarterback, cycling through several over the last few seasons.
But they are hoping to find those answers this season under first-year coach Todd Monken, who did his part to lay the building blocks this offseason during their 10-week workout program that gave both rookies and veterans a glimpse at fit in the new system.
With the team coming off an abysmal five-win season, they’ll look to start strong this season against the Jacksonville Jaguars upon their Sept. 13 opener.
The question will be which signal caller is trotting out for the Browns as that question takes center stage.
It’ll be between two competitors: Deshaun Watson or Shedeur Sanders.
The duo split first team reps all spring and Monken plans to extend the competition with no set timeline ahead of camp beginning in late July.
To read more about the case for Sanders, here is the full story from Browns Roundtable writer Ashish Mathur.
Now that Watson is considered healthy following two Achilles procedure, he’ll certainly have to prove his durability and improved performance.
Sanders, who ended the season as starter for Cleveland last year, has to work on some of his bad habits and carry his growth momentum into training camp and the eventual season should he win the job.
The only thing that Monken has laid out is that he’ll have a starter by Week 1.
It’s a crowded room that saw four quarterbacks on the roster at one point last year, and it still includes 2025 third round pick Dillon Gabriel, who was selected multiple rounds ahead of Sanders but remains behind him on the depth chart.
Then there’s the developmental option in rookie Taylen Green.
They’ll have to make a lot of decisions within that room ahead of the season start.
