From social media outbursts to a rare reserve-list designation, the fractured relationship between the star receiver and San Francisco faces a breaking point as trade rumors intensify.

It hasn't exactly been a quiet offseason for the San Francisco 49ers and their star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

The embattled relationship between the two parties has again reignited into public discourse that has many believing that the clock on Aiyuk's time in San Francisco may finally run out.

For more on the latest developments in the situation, headlined by Aiyuk's social media messaging, 49ers Roundtable writer Kyler Fox has more information.

Aiyuk arrived with star potential in the NFL when he was drafted by the 49ers in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Coming out of Arizona State, Aiyuk immediately became a contributor upon arrival in San Francisco, but quickly broke out in 2022 and 2023. In 2023, he reeled in 75 receptions for 1,342 receiving yards and seven touchdown catches.

While it was the peak of his performance to that point, it was also the catalyst year for the drama that continues to unfold years later.

Following his breakout season, contract disputes began between the two sides. As he entered his fifth-year option, trade rumors began to swirl as the wideout was positioning for a long-term extension with the team.

The frustration grew to a boiling point when Aiyuk requested and was granted permission to seek a trade. Despite that, the two sides would finally agree upon a four-year extension that paid the receiver $120 million just before the 2024 season began.

That resolution only lasted so long, however. Aiyuk suffered a season ending injury partway through the 2024 season . He in just 7 games and averaging only 53.4 receiving yards per contest, the second-lowest average of his career.

Tension then managed to reach entirely new levels as the receiver was then placed on the rarely used reserve/left squad list ahead of the 2025 NFL season, ending his year before it began. Aiyuk did not take a single snap in 2025.

Since then, the conditions between the player and team have only continued to worsen with public displays on social media from the wideout and trade talks reportedly continuing between the 49ers and interested teams.

The Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns were often mentioned as potential landing spots throughout these trade considerations.

That brings us to the 2026 offseason where there is still no certainty available as to where things will go next. The result so far is shocking considering the two sides just reached a new deal less than two years ago. But that only highlights the absurdity of the situation so far.

It seems the 49ers and Aiyuk are destined for a split, with the Washington Commanders often the team projected to be involved. For San Francisco, offloading the wideout to a more preferable situation appears to be the next step canot come soon enough.
