Cam Skattebo's Giants Future is Becoming Increasingly Obvious

New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo quickly captured the heart of the city during his rookie campaign with the squad, evoking memories of Brandon Jacobs — a much smaller version — when fans watched him plowing through defenders and lowering his shoulder with impunity.

Unfortunately, Skattebo's 2025 campaign was abbreviated due to a gruesome ankle injury he suffered in Week 8, resulting in surgery and a long recovery process.

Skattebo has made remarkable progress and is well on track to be on the field for the Giants' Week 1 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys ... unless he does something stupid. Like attempting a backflip, for example.

That's exactly what the 24-year-old tried at Fanatics Fest late last week, but the problem is that he didn't stick the landing.

Was Skattebo injured? No, but the fact that he even attempted it — and then said "I'm just gonna keep being me — is a major concern.

New York is expecting Skattebo to be its No. 1 back in 2026. Yes, Tyrone Tracy is in the fold, as well, but more than likely, Skattebo will be the featured guy.

So long as he keeps himself in one piece between now and the season opener, of course.

Skattebo's play style is fun to watch. He's a 5-foot-11, 215-pound bowling ball with a remarkable tolerance for pain. He is also incredibly skilled. We all saw that during his time at Arizona State before he even joined the professional ranks.

But how much time does Skattebo actually have with the Giants?

As a fourth-round pick, the Rio Linda, Ca. native does not have a fifth-year option. So barring an extension (which I don't think will happen for reasons I'll soon explain), Skattebo's contract will expire after 2028.

It's just hard to imagine Skattebo having a very long shelf life.

I hope I'm wrong, because Skattebo is incredibly personable, entertaining and — when he isn't putting himself in harm's way — a really good football player.

But running backs are typically not long for the NFL as it is, and their peaks tend to be very short. Especially in a modern era where the ground game is not nearly as prioritized as it once was.

And that's even more true when you take as many hits as Skattebo.

Perhaps Skattebo will prove my claims false and establish himself as a durable, elite weapon over these next couple of seasons. But I'm just not sure "durable" and "elite" are mutually inclusive when it comes to Skatt.

My guess? Skattebo will play out his rookie contract in New York and then take his talents elsewhere ... or, God forbid, will be out of the league entirely.

His style is just too inviting to injuries, as is his stubborn — yet still lovable — personality.
