Former Giants Coach Reveals Why New York Will Continue to Fail cover image

The New York Giants won't find success until they make this change.

Once again, the New York Giants are looking for a new head coach, and once again, it might not matter. Why? Because nothing is changing at the top.

For some inexplicable reason, the Giants have elected to bring back general manager Joe Schoen for a fifth season, this even though New York has gone 22-45-1 under his direction.

Yes, Schoen has made some good draft picks over the years, but he has also flubbed a bunch of them, and his salary cap mismanagement has been a massive thorn in the Giants' side.

So while there is some excitement over the idea of a new coach because of the presence of Jaxson Dart and some other impressive young pieces, the fact that New York refuses to make any truly significant organizational changes could doom the franchise yet again.

Dan Duggan of The Athletic, who called Big Blue's decision to retain Schoen "incomprehensible," pulled up a four-year old quote from a former Giants staff member, and it outlined everything wrong with the front office and why things probably won't change regardless of the head coach.

"Their solution forever has been hire a new coach, and he’ll solve all the ills, but they didn’t change anything else,” the ex-staffer said. "They didn’t change their personnel department; they didn’t change how they do things; they didn’t change any of that stuff."

Sounds familiar, doesn't it?

"If you want to make a real organizational change, you’ve got to change everybody," the former staff member added. "You’ve got to change the people who are in charge of the personnel. You’ve got to get new ideas in there."

This was back when New York hired Brian Daboll, who actually led the G-Men to the playoffs in his debut campaign but then fell flat the next two-and-a-half years before being fired.

Whoever the ex-staffer is, they have a point.

The Giants have cycled through coaches like water ever since Tom Coughlin's departure following the 2015 campaign. Ben McAdoo. Pat Shurmur. Joe Judge. Daboll. No matter who has been on the sideline, the end result has mostly been the same.

New York has made just two playoff appearances since winning its last Super Bowl in February 2012. You know, back when the Giants actually used to be well-respected.

Now, Big Blue has turned into an NFL laughing stock, and it really is only a step above the New York Jets at this point.

Perhaps a new coach really will come in and change everything. Having Dart certainly helps, too. But it feels like the Giants missed a golden opportunity to clean house here.
