The New York Giants announced major Jaxson Dart news on Friday.
Dart won't play in Week 12 because he's still in the concussion protocol.
The Giants face the Detroit Lions this Sunday. Veteran Jameis Winston will start and Russell Wilson will be the No. 2 QB.
Winston started last week against the Green Bay Packers. He went 19-29 for 201 yards and one interception. The Giants lost by a final score of 27-20.
Dart has thrown for 1,417 yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions and rushed for 317 yards and seven touchdowns this season. Against the Chicago Bears in Week 10, he was checked for a concussion for the fourth time this season, including the preseason.
New York fired Brian Daboll after the Chicago gamel and according to NFL insider Jordan Raanan of ESPN, Daboll's approach with Dart played a role in him losing his job.
"Coaching can make a difference in close games, and the Giants have already blown four double-digit leads on the road this season," Raanan wrote. "It also gets held against Daboll that Dart was injured under his watch. Daboll was insistent on not wanting to take away his young quarterback's aggressiveness. But the reckless nature in which Dart was taking hits ultimately led to this point. The need to avoid this wasn't stressed.
"Basically, this was the breaking point after blowing another game, the poor results and a handful of embarrassing incidents such as entering the blue medical tent to check on Dart while he was being examined for a concussion, which warranted discipline from the league."
Daboll went 20-40-1 with the Giants in the regular season and 1-1 in the playoffs. He was hired in 2022.
New York already lost rookie stud Cam Skattebo to a season-ending injury. The last thing they need is for Dart to get hurt as well.
With that said, if Dart plays again this season, it will fascinating to see if he protects himself more under interim head coach Mike Kafka.
