Giants Coach Brian Daboll Reveals Clear Russell Wilson Stance cover image

Brian Daboll spoke out about the New York Giants' quarterback situation and Russell Wilson after their Week 1 loss.

The New York Giants were hoping to start of the 2025 NFL season on a high note. Going up against the Washington Commanders on the road was a tough matchup, but the Giants had a chance to make a strong statement to kick things off.

Unfortunately, that did not end up being the case.

When all was said and done, New York lost its season opener to the Commanders by a final score of 21-6. It wasn't a pretty loss either and the Giants' offense had a very long afternoon.

Russell Wilson made his first start in New York. He completed 17 of his 37 pass attempts for 168 yards, no touchdowns, and no interceptions. In addition, Wilson ran for 44 yards on eight attempts.

While it wasn't a horrible performance, he wasn't able to make much of an impact.

Following the game, head coach Brian Daboll was asked about Wilson continuing to be the starter. The Giants are very high on rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, but it sounds like Wilson will remain the lead man moving into Week 2 action.

"I have confidence in Russ. We have to do better around ... overall," Daboll said.

Outside of Wilson, the running game was downright bad for New York. Tyrone Tracy Jr. led the way in rushing with 10 carries for 24 yards. That isn't going to get the job done.

Defensively, the Giants did enough to win the game. Giving up 21 points will give the offense a chance to win any game. Sadly, the offense was not up to the challenge.

Looking ahead to next week, New York will need to see improvement. The Giants will face off against the Dallas Cowboys on the road. That game needs to look much different than the season opener.

If Wilson is unable to come through with a more impactful performance, the calls for Dart to get on the field will grow louder. He'll be under a lot of pressure throughout the next week.

Add in the fact that losing two NFC East matchups to begin the season would be detrimental to the team's chances of getting into the playoffs and things look even more important.

Expect to continue hearing talks about Wilson and the Giants' quarterback situation moving forward. It wasn't a good start, but there is no need for New York to panic just yet.
