Could the New York Giants make a move for this future Hall-of-Famer before the NFL trade deadline?
The New York Giants definitely have a chance to win the NFC East, as they are sitting at 3-1-1 and in first place heading into their Week 6 matchup with the New Orleans Saints.
However, it's hard to ignore all of the holes the Giants have.
One of the most glaring areas of concern is with the pass rush, which is not what anyone anticipated heading into the season. Of course, no one thought superstar edge rusher Brian Burns would tear his ACL in Week 6, either.
Abdul Carter has logged just two sacks through five games while Kayvon Thibodeaux is sack-less and hasn't even registered a quarterback hit since the season opener.
On the campaign overall, New York has totaled eight sacks as a team, which ranks toward the bottom of the NFL.
So could the Giants make a move for another pass rusher before the trade deadline?
One name that has surfaced as a possibility is future Hall-of-Famer Khalil Mack, especially now that the Los Angeles Chargers are 0-5.
Mack signed a one-year, $18 million contract to stay with the Chargers back in March. Through five games, he has recorded three sacks, which would lead New York.
It doesn't make a whole lot of sense for Los Angeles to keep the former Defensive Player of the Year with the club being out of playoff contention, so the Chargers could ultimately trade Mack between now and Nov. 10.
Mack isn't quite the dominant force he once was, but he would still provide the Giants with a much-needed lift along their front seven. Plus, New York would only assume the remainder of his base salary for 2026, which would come out to a very manageable cap hit of about $6.22 million.
The 35-year-old would also give the Giants valuable veteran leadership in the locker room, and even at this stage, he would be a difference-maker for Big Blue.
Of course, the question is the cost.
New York has already parted with three 2027 draft picks: a fourth, a fifth and a seventh-rounder. It just moved its fifth-round pick for J.J. McCarthy last month in a move that is still relatively difficult for me to grasp.
The Giants could always trade a future draft choice for Mack, but does New York really want to subtract another draft asset for a rental?
There is always the chance that Mack plays so well and enjoys his time in the Big Apple so much that he elects to re-sign with the Giants next spring, but retirement speculation has surged around Mack for the last couple of years.
And you do have to wonder just how much Mack actually has left in the tank.
Regardless, it's an interesting thought for New York, which clearly needs some more juice in a pass rush that had to rely heavily on blitzes the last two weeks.
