Do the New York Giants really want to turn J.J. McCarthy loose against the Houston Texans?
New York Giants head coach John Harbaugh is certainly tempted to make a change at quarterback after what we saw on Sunday.
Jameis Winston was benched with the Giants trailing the New Orleans Saints 34-10 in the fourth quarter. J.J. McCarthy entered the game and then rattled off 17 straight points and came this close to sending the game into overtime.
New York traded a fifth-round pick for McCarthy last month following the Jaxson Dart injury, so surely, the Giants want to extract some value out of him one way or another.
The prevailing thought was that McCarthy would likely steal Winston's starting job at some point this season, although the fact that New York went 2-0-1 in Winston's first three starts under center put things on hold.
But now that the Giants were blown back by a previously 1-4 team in Winston's most recent start, Harbaugh has cause to make a switch.
The problem? New York is heading on the road to face a suddenly hot Houston Texans team this Sunday. You know, the Texans squad that boasts a pass rush featuring Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson as well as a secondary led by Derek Stingley Jr.
Houston's defense hasn't been quite as good in 2026, ranking one spot below the Giants at No. 15. In fact, their pass defense ranks 27th.
That being said, you get the feeling that the Texans are much better than their lousy statistics and 2-4 record indicate, and Reliant Stadium might not exactly be the safest landing zone for McCarthy next week.
So does New York actually start out Week 7 with Winston under center and then sub him out for McCarthy if things don't go well? Or does Harbaugh express total confidence in McCarthy and give him the ball from the jump?
The former is definitely the safer route. McCarthy still has a lot to prove, and while he was certainly impressive with 243 yards and a touchdown against the Saints, he completed just 11 of his 21 passes and threw an interception.
And the Texans are not the Saints. Especially not in Houston.
The Giants will have their bye week after the Texans matchup, and then they will have a couple of very winnable contests against the Philadelphia Eagles and Washington Commanders in the two weeks that follow.
That will represent a much more secure point of entry for McCarthy, who is still very rough around the edges.
But if Harbaugh really trusts the young signal-caller and/or he simply does not feel Winston is up to snuff, perhaps he will just throw McCarthy to the wolves this weekend.
