New York Giants fans should relax when it comes to Malachi Fields.
The New York Giants clearly wanted Notre Dame wide receiver Malachi Fields in the NFL Draft, trading their fourth-round draft pick as well as their 2027 fourth and fifth-rounders to move up and select him at No. 74 in the third round last month.
Fields is one of the most intriguing receivers in the class, possessing tremendous size at 6-foot-4, 225 pounds and representing the exact type of X-receiver the Giants have needed for so long.
However, New York fans are already starting to overreact to a report about Fields' performance at rookie minicamp.
ESPN's Jordan Raanan revealed that Fields dropped a pair of passes last Saturday, which has some of the Big Blue faithful already wondering if selecting the towering weapon may have been a mistake.
But Giants fans are missing the fine print in Raanan's story.
"The former Notre Dame wide receiver did drop a couple of passes during Saturday's practice -- reminiscent of rookie minicamp in 2019, when wide receiver Darius Slayton couldn't catch anything. Turns out, dropping passes has been a problem for Slayton throughout his career," Raanan wrote. "The difference here is that Fields had a minuscule 1.6% drop rate last season for the Irish and was among college football's best at making contested catches with 10."

Fields dropping two passes in rookie minicamp doesn't change that.
Drops happen. Maybe he was just nervous. Maybe the throws weren't the best. None of us were there. We didn't see.
But until Fields actually starts botching plays in meaningful action, people shouldn't be getting too concerned. And for what it's worth, head coach John Harbaugh absolutely raved about the 22-year-old.
"Did you see him on the slants [Saturday]?" Harbaugh said. "He made every catch [Friday]. Made one high catch over the top of the corner one time."
Fields hauled in 36 receptions for 630 yards and five touchdowns in 2025, averaging a hefty 17.5 yards per catch during his lone season with the Fighting Irish.
He also posted back-to-back 800-yard campaigns at Virginia in 2023 and 2024.
With Malik Nabers still working his way back from a torn ACL and neither Darnell Mooney nor Calvin Austin III being sure things, expect Fields to play a significant role in the Giants' offense next fall.
