New York Giants starter Jameis Winston came in ranked last of a new quarterback tier.
After an impressive Week 1 performance, all the hopes of the New York Giants came crashing down in Week 2.
Quarterback Jaxson Dart suffered a season-ending injury, leaving the organization wondering how this year may have gone. While the season is still very early in the process, New York did lose its leader and one of the best players.
Backup Jameis Winston has taken over for Dart, and while Winston has talent, he has had an interesting NFL career. Winston, the former No. 1 overall pick of the 2015 NFL Draft, has never been able to live up to the hype that he entered the league with.
But Winston can help the Giants win some games, and for now at least, he will be the starter moving forward. The veteran got the start against the Tennessee Titans a week ago, and he did lead the team to a win.
However, Winston looked off his game, throwing just 118 yards against the Titans. New York is going to need more from him going forward if this group wants to have any chance to get into the playoffs.
After the lackluster performance against the Titans, Winston was ranked dead last on a new quarterback tier from NFL.com. Winston made his first start of the season for New York, but for him to come in last is a brutal way to start his year.
So far, Winston has thrown for 229 yards with no touchdown passes and one interception, while completing just 51.0 percent of his passes. The veteran has also rushed for 15 yards in his limited time on the field.
The Giants do sit at 2-1 in the new season, giving them some hope for a possible playoff run. But Winston will be relied on heavily, and it remains to be seen if he can deliver when the team needs him most.
New York did trade for J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings this week, but for now, Winston will remain the starter. However, if he were to put together more troubling starts for the Giants, head coach John Harbaugh may decide to make a change.
The next two games could define the season for this team, with New York playing the Arizona Cardinals and Washington Commanders. Both games are winnable for the Giants, and if Winston can step up, New York could find itself being 4-1 at the end of it.
