What exactly did New York Giants coach John Harbaugh mean by this?

The New York Giants swung a trade to acquire J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings on Monday, giving them another body at the quarterback position with Jaxson Dart out for the season due to a knee injury.

Jameis Winston is expected to be the starter against the Arizona Cardinals next week, but the prevailing thought is that McCarthy could eventually steal the job from the veteran, who has struggled thus far in 2026.

Giants head coach John Harbaugh has maintained that Winston is the starter for now, but he has not committed to anything long term.

But when discussing the quarterback situation with reporters on Monday, Harbaugh offered a rather strange comment regarding Dart's future.

“Our design is to win the next game. Our design is to be 1-0 next week,” Harbaugh said. “And any other conversation — you could ask me who’s going to be the starting quarterback next year or five years, I don’t know. But I do know we’re going to be playing the Cardinals in six days, and that’s how it works. All the other conversation isn’t going to help us beat the Cardinals, so it’s irrelevant.”

Hmm. Next year? He doesn't know?

Now, this could have just been Harbaugh speaking generally. In other words, no one knows what the future holds. Dart could demand a trade tomorrow, the Kansas City Chiefs could offer Patrick Mahomes and 10 first-round picks for Dart ... that sort of thing.

So maybe we shouldn't read too much into Harbaugh's statement. But is there also a possibility that he genuinely doesn't know will be under center for the Giants in 2027?

Dart has looked terrific since taking over as New York's starter early last season. He also had the best performance of his young career against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1. But the jury is still largely out on Dart, who has made a grand total of 14 starts and already has a checkered injury history less than two years in.

This is why I felt the McCarthy trade was a bit odd from a long-term perspective. McCarthy is 23. He is under team control through 2028 (he has a fifth-year option for that final season). He is a former top-10 pick.

Maybe New York is looking to flip McCarthy for a better draft pick at year's end. Or perhaps the Giants wanted him to help with their playoff push this year. No one knows exactly why Harbaugh and Joe Schoen decided to complete this deal, but they sure do.

“You need another quarterback in our situation, and you wanted to go get the very best quarterback you could get, which is what we did,” Harbaugh added. “That’s the thinking. Anything else beyond that, I’m not really comprehending the question, I guess. But that’s it. That’s very simple.”

You can see that Harbaugh is being intentionally vague.

It's also entirely possible that New York will weigh its options in what is expected to be an incredibly deep quarterback draft class this offseason.

Whatever the case may be, Harbaugh's comments on the Giants' current circumstances at signal-caller did not exactly sound like a ringing endorsement for Dart.
