The New York Giants should absolutely not be trading Kayvon Thibodeaux under these circumstances.

Trade rumors have been swirling around New York Giants edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux for over a year now, and they aren't subsiding with the 2026 NFL regular season just around the corner.

The Giants drafted Abdul Carter last spring, and they selected Arvell Reese a few months ago. They also have Brian Burns on the edge.

Yes, Reese will be playing inside, but there is no doubting his pass-rushing potential, and that has already been on display in training camp.

Thibodeaux is in the final year of his contract, so he will almost certainly be gone after the campaign concludes. Unless, of course, New York moves him before then.

ESPN's Seth Walder recently concocted yet another trade proposal regarding Thibodeaux, and this one had him going to the New England Patriots in exchange for a third-round pick.

That actually sounds like a pretty decent return ... until you see that Walder also had the Giants sending a fifth-rounder to the Patriots, as well.

Remember: New York traded away its 2027 fourth-round draft choice in the deal that helped it land Malachi Fields during the draft, so there really is no reason for the Giants to be parting with any more draft capital unless they are reaping an impact player in return.

Yes, New York would also be netting a third-rounder in this instance, so it would essentially be moving up two rounds. But that's not enough for the Giants.

I firmly believe that Thibodeaux should be available between now and the trade deadline in November. But not at his current price tag.

Thibodeaux's value is down. There is no doubt about it. Since his breakout 2023 campaign in which he racked up 50 tackles and 11.5 sacks, the former first-round pick has amassed a grand total of eight sacks while missing 12 games in two seasons.

No team is going to willfully hand New York a Day 2 pick right now. That is, of course, unless another club is absolutely desperate for a pass rusher due to injury or some other reason.

But if Thibodeaux has a strong first couple of months of 2026? Then perhaps another squad would be more open to parting with an early draft selection at the deadline in order to acquire the 25-year-old for the stretch run.

The Giants probably aren't going to have any luck trading Thibodeaux right now, and to be quite frank, they seem to be planning a rather significant role for him, anyway.

New York can definitely revisit this midseason if it is out of playoff contention.
