The New York Giants have made a major decision on quarterback Jameis Winston's contract.

The New York Giants are signing quarterback Jameis Winston to a two-year, $13 million extension with the franchise. Winston has been a valuable backup quarterback for the Giants, and he will continue to serve as a mentor for Jaxson Dart.

Winston is regarded as one of the best backup quarterbacks in the league, as he's proven he can come in and effectively lead an offense.

He appeared in three games and started in two for the Giants in the 2025 season, completing 56.1 percent of his passes for 567 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions.

In his 11-year career, Winston has completed 61.1 percent of his passes for 24,792 yards, 156 touchdowns, and 113 interceptions. He is a gunslinger and can effectively step in for Dart if he is out with an injury.

NFL insider Jordan Schultz shared a text he received about how much of an impact Winston has as a backup quarterback.

"He's the ultimate glue guy. I don’t know how many backup QBs can reach every player the way he does."

Winston is known for his great personality, being a locker-room leader, and slinging it downfield when he is in the game.

He will be a key mentor for Dart, who is looking to develop into a quality starting quarterback in his second season. Dart showed flashes in his rookie campaign, completing 63.7 percent of his passes for 2,272 yards, 15 touchdowns, and five interceptions. He was also effective on the ground, rushing for 487 yards and nine touchdowns on 86 attempts.

Winston came up as a first-rounder and knows what it's like to have the pressure of being a franchise quarterback. He should continue to provide valuable insight as Dart continues to develop as a player.

With John Harbaugh taking over as the head coach and the young talent in place, the Giants have a chance to surprise teams this season. Re-signing a leader and mentor like Winston solidifies the quarterback room for the next few years in New York.
