In Jaxson Dart’s first career start, he targeted the Giants top wide receiver, Malik Nabers went airborne trying to catch an explosive pass against Los Angeles Chargers’ defensive back, Cam Hart, and as he went down, immediately grabbed his right knee and was seen screaming.
Shortly after, Nabers was then carted off the field as he looked visibly distraught bringing a towel over his face.
Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, and later Giants beat reporter Jordan Ranaan confirmed that the injury is to believed to be an ACL injury.
Upon Nabers going down, MetLife Stadium was dead silent.
Giants fans have been clamoring for Dart to start, considering the connection that Nabers and previous quarterback Russell Wilson wasn’t working the way many had hoped to be. Since Dart was famously known as a slinger in college, it seemed like the perfect marriage between him and Nabers.
Currently, it’s too early to tell what Nabers’ injury is. However, given Nabers’ reaction, and him getting carted off, it’s easy to immediately think about a possible worst case scenario.
In Week 4’s game against the Chargers, Nabers hauled in two catches for 20 yards.
Outside a breakout game in Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys, where he caught nine passes for 167 yards, Nabers has mostly had a frustrating season. He’s been targeted 35 times, but has only caught 18 passes and has been visibly frustrated whether it would be arguing with coach Brian Daboll or demanding the ball in the press.
Regardless, it’s hard to ignore the talent that Nabers has, and how much he raises the Giants’ ceiling. He was drafted in the first round, sixth overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, and instantly made the Pro Bowl in his rookie season.
He posted an impressive 1,204 receiving yards and seven touchdowns, while having the quarterback room last season split between Daniel Jones, Drew Lock, Tommy DeVito and Tim Boyle.
Not only that, he finished fifth in voting for the Offensive Rookie of the Year, an award that Washington Commanders quarterback, Jayden Daniels won.
