The New York Giants fired defense coordinator Shane Bowen on Monday.
The move was made by interim head coach Mike Kafka, who spoke to the media via Zoom after firing Bowen.
"Made the tough decision today to let Shane go as our defense coordinator and effective immediately we're going to let Charlie Bullen run the defense as our defensive coordinator," Kafka said. "I have a lot of faith in Charlie and obviously these decisions aren't easy and Shane's a good person. He's a good man. He's a good coach. Just the results just weren't where we wanted them to be and so Charlie's going to step up for us and rally the group.
"The defensive staff will rally around Charlie and put together a great plan. I got a lot of confidence in the room and a lot of confidence in our staff to do that."
The Giants are 30th in the NFL in points per game allowed. They gave up 34 points to the Detroit Lions on Sunday, blowing yet another lead.
"I just had an opportunity to watch the tape, look back at a few weeks, watch a lot of the defense, watch a lot of what was going on, the communication, and just felt like this was the right time to do it," Kafka said. "When I got the job, I didn't want to make a lot of rash decisions and jump to anything really quick. I wanted to have some time to sit back, evaluate it, look at it and kind of figure out what the best thing to do was.
"So, I wanted to be calculated in how I handled it and I thought today was the right time."
The Giants are 2-10 on the season. They will miss the playoffs again and have a high draft pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.
New York has five games left in the season against the New England Patriots, Washington Commanders, Minnesota Vikings, Las Vegas Raiders and Dallas Cowboys.
Kafka believes Bullen will do good job leading the defense for the rest of the way.
"I have a lot of faith in Charlie and the things that he's brought from the pedigree that he brings coming into this defense," Kafka said. "I think he's a smart coach. I think he's detailed, he's aggressive and his room has had a lot of production, and I think he's ready for the task and I know he's ready for the task. And so he's going to jump in, he's meeting with the staff right now and these guys will get rolling for him."
