This New York Giants defender could be in some danger heading into the NFL season.
Two years ago, the New York Giants selected cornerback Dru Phillips in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft, and the Giants were treated to quite a surprise during his rookie campaign.
Phillips played in 14 games his first NFL season, registering 71 tackles, a sack and an interception while playing in the nickel role. He also registered a 78.5 overall grade at Pro Football Focus, which ranked seventh among 117 qualifying cornerbacks.
It looked like New York had landed a complete steal ... until last season.
Phillips' sophomore campaign was certainly not like his debut, as he struggled both in coverage and in making tackles throughout the year. There were times where he was completely out of position and appeared absolutely clueless, which was on full display during the Giants' collapse against the Denver Broncos.
It wasn't just the Broncos game, though. Phillips had a rough year overall, and now, he has John Harbaugh disciple Ar'Darius Washington breathing down his neck for playing time.
As of right now, Phillips is still the starting nickelback, but he is definitely not on firm footing. Washington was terrific for Harbaugh's Baltimore Ravens during his last healthy season in 2024, and while he missed most of last year with a torn Achilles, you can bet Harbaugh will be itching to get him on the field for Big Blue.

Credit: Bill Streicher-Imagn Images.It's also important to remember that free-agent signing Greg Newsome II has played some nickel in his career, as well, so in the event that Deonte Banks or rookie cornerback Colton Hood steals a starting job on the outside, Newsome could also very well displace Phillips as the primary nickel.
The Giants open training camp later this month, and the secondary will be one of the most interesting position groups to watch. There will also be considerable pressure on Phillips to prove to Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson that he belongs.
I can't imagine that the new coaching staff is going to exercise much patience with a struggling player from the old regime, so Phillips could be on thin ice.
Of course, the University of Kentucky product did have a very strong year in 2024, so a bounce back is entirely possible for him this coming fall. Surely, Harbaugh and Wilson are aware of that.
But if Phillips slips early, you can bet that Harbaugh won't hesitate to pull the plug.
Phillips has largely been forgotten at this point, as Giants fans seem to be directing their attention elsewhere (like Malik Nabers' health status). However, the 24-year-old should absolutely be monitored closely this summer.
