Could the New York Giants actually cut Paulson Adebo?
Things have gotten bad for New York Giants cornerback Paulson Adebo. How bad? Bad enough that John Harbaugh trusts Deonte Banks and Greg Newsome II, a pair of first-round disappointments, over the expensive Adebo in Week 1.
The Giants have both Banks and Newsome listed as starters heading into the season, this even though they signed Adebo to a three-year, $54 million contract in March 2025.
Of course, Harbaugh wasn't around for that deal, but it's hard to imagine he would have had much of a problem with it at the time given how well Adebo played during his first four NFL seasons with the New Orleans Saints.
But now, things have reached a point where Adebo seems to be a clear cut candidate next offseason, and considering New York just released wide receiver Darius Slayton with little to no financial benefit, one would imagine that Adebo isn't safe.
Dan Duggan of The Athletic provided an update on Adebo's status and went as far to say that perhaps one of the biggest reasons why the Giants didn't dump Adebo this summer was because of New York's lack of cornerback depth.
"There would be no financial benefit from cutting Adebo, whose $17.25 million base salary this season is fully guaranteed. And even though he had a disappointing offseason, the Giants’ cornerback situation eliminated that from being a consideration," Duggan wrote.
New York didn't necessarily have to release Adebo, but it could have sought out a trade for the 26-year-old. Clearly, reaping a Day 3 pick in return for Adebo wasn't a feasible option for the Giants, and that's understandable.
But the fact that we are even discussing this indicates just how far Adebo has fallen since his glory days with the Saints.
Not that Adebo was ever known as an elite, lockdown corner, but he was good in New Orleans, and when New York signed him a year-and-a-half ago, it seemed like a solid move.
But the former third-round pick played in just 12 games last season and struggled when he was on the field, falling well short of his high expectations.
Perhaps a move to the bench will invigorate Adebo, who now has a chip on his shoulder and doesn't exactly have a ton of competition in front of him. But Banks and Newsome were both impressive in training camp; Adebo wasn't.
If Adebo doesn't turn things around this fall, he is all but guaranteed to be served his walking papers next spring.
