The New York Giants could target defensive tackle Grover Stewart at the NFL trade deadline, but they face a major snag in trade talks.
The New York Giants are absolutely in need of defensive tackle help, and there will be a handful of serviceable DTs available before the NFL trade deadline.
One of them is Grover Stewart, the Indianapolis Colts veteran who seems to be a sure-fire goner between now and Nov. 10.
The Colts have already traded away fellow defensive tackle DeForest Buckner as well as offensive guard Quenton Nelson, so it seems like Stewart could be next.
But can the Giants strike a deal for the veteran?
Stewart would no doubt be a great fit in New York. He has been a criminally underrated run stopper throughout his NFL career, and putting him alongside of DJ Reader could give New York one of the nastier interior duos in football.
However, the Giants face a couple of problems in their potential pursuit of Stewart.
First of all, the 33-year-old is slated to hit free agency at season's end, so New York could be parting with draft capital — of which it already does not have much — for someone who will just walk in March.
The Giants have traded away their fourth, fifth and seventh-round picks this year. They own two sixth-rounders, one of which came via trade with the Jacksonville Jaguars just before the start of the season.
New York might be able to acquire Stewart for a sixth, but do the Giants really want to move another pick for someone who won't even be with the team beyond 2026?
Second, the Giants have just $6.23 million in cap space at the moment, and Stewart carries a $6.82 million cap hit. That means New York would have to move around some money in order to fit Stewart into the payroll, which is something it surely does not want to do.
Stewart has historically been a very good player. There is no doubt about it. However, he showed serious signs of decline last season and has been rather pedestrian thus far in 2026. He would be an upgrade over what the Giants currently have in the trenches (outside of Reader, of course), but is he really worth the trouble?
Rookie Bobby Jamison-Travis showed some great signs against the Houston Texans last week, so he actually could end up being a solution for New York. And he wouldn't cost anything.
The Giants have put themselves in a position where they really cannot afford to surrender any more draft picks, and they don't have a whole lot of financial wiggle room.
For that, I'm just not sure that a Stewart pursuit is the answer.
